Description
Based at the Sherwood Park Inter Pipeline office, the Health & Safety Advisor reports to the Supervisor, Safety & Emergency Management and supports the Sherwood Park district. This professional role within the Transportation Business Unit is responsible for implementing and sustaining health, safety, and environmental programs that drive industry-leading performance and support the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of Inter Pipeline assets.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
- Support the planning, execution, and evaluation of tabletop exercises and emergency response drills.
- Serve as the designated Safety Officer during emergency response and recovery activities.
- Contribute to organizational readiness through participation in emergency planning initiatives and lessons learned reviews.
- Coach, mentor, and support employees and contractors in the application of health and safety programs that promote safe, reliable, and compliant operations.
- Identify, assess, and facilitate the resolution of health and safety program gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of health and safety systems, processes, and programs through continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist in the development and implementation of occupational health and safety plans when Inter Pipeline is acting as the Prime Contractor and monitor contractor safety plans when responsibilities have been delegated to a third party.
- Incorporate cost awareness into planning activities related to work execution, training, projects, and travel.
- Provide operational teams with insights into the financial impacts of health and safety initiatives to support effective annual budgeting and resource planning.
- Provide health and safety leadership and support during operational and emergency situations.
- Maintain a strong field presence, spending approximately one to two weeks per month in operational areas to build relationships and support safe work practices.
- Develop and deliver training programs, including program rollouts and targeted safety initiatives, as required.
- Validate employee training where support from the Training Department is unavailable.
- Lead and participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development.
- Participate in regulatory compliance audits and assessments of internal standards and procedures.
- Conduct and support planned workplace inspections and hazard identification activities.
- Partner with leadership teams to support monthly safety meetings and ongoing safety performance discussions.
- Evaluate and provide recommendations regarding the purchase and use of health and safety equipment, including atmospheric monitoring devices and related technologies.
- Participate in operational planning meetings to ensure health and safety considerations are integrated into work activities.
- Facilitate recurring incident review meetings to improve accountability, address aging reports, and ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions.
- Support the execution of strategic initiatives by incorporating safety leadership and continuous improvement into daily activities.
- Provide Operations Supervisors with regular safety performance metrics, including:
o Hazard Identification (HID) observations, task observations, and performance targets.
o Outstanding audit findings and corrective actions.
o Emerging health and safety concerns and areas of risk.
Education, Skills and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field is required.
- A recognized health and safety professional designation, or active progress toward obtaining one, is required.
- 5–7 years of progressive Health & Safety experience, preferably within the energy, pipeline, or industrial sectors.
- Demonstrated experience supporting operational teams in a field-based environment.
- Experience with incident investigations, auditing, emergency response, and safety management systems is considered an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively influence, coach, and engage employees at all levels of the organization.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Proven ability to coordinate work activities, manage schedules, and deliver results in a dynamic operational environment.
- Strong commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and fostering a positive safety culture.
