Full job description
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Director of Care provides strategic and operational leadership for all clinical and nursing services, ensuring the delivery of exceptional resident-centered care. As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Care is accountable for the planning, coordination, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of nursing and interdisciplinary care programs.
This role fosters collaboration among clinical teams, consulting professionals, support services, residents, and families to promote excellence in care delivery, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance. In the absence of the General Manager, the Director of Care assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Care Community.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Resident Care
- Collaborate with contracted service providers to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained and recreation programs are delivered safely, effectively, and in alignment with resident needs.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate departmental goals, policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Establish, monitor, and evaluate standards of nursing practice and professional care in accordance with regulatory, legal, organizational, and professional requirements.
- Ensure care programs address the physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social well-being of residents.
- Facilitate resident admissions, transfers, and discharges to support seamless transitions of care.
- Lead resident care conferences within 12 weeks of admission and annually thereafter, promoting collaborative care planning and family engagement.
- Ensure accurate, comprehensive, and confidential health records are maintained.
Quality, Risk Management & Compliance
- Establish and oversee systems that measure quality of care, resident outcomes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Analyze resident care data, including incident reports, infection prevention and control metrics, audits, and quality indicators, and provide recommendations to the Administrator.
- Promote compliance with accreditation standards, professional practice requirements, legislation, and organizational policies.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees including Infection Prevention and Control, Complex Care, and other interdisciplinary quality and clinical committees.
People Leadership & Professional Development
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to nursing and interdisciplinary teams.
- Identify and address staff orientation, education, and professional development needs.
- Coordinate and deliver in-service education programs and promote a culture of lifelong learning and clinical excellence.
- Organize and oversee student placements for nursing and resident care programs, supporting the development of future healthcare professionals.
Operations & Resource Management
- Develop and maintain documentation, reporting, and communication systems that support operational effectiveness and clinical excellence.
- Maintain effective communication and collaborative relationships with physicians, allied health professionals, support services, community partners, and Continuing Care Program representatives.
Additional Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain a safe working environment and promptly report unsafe conditions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a requirement.
- Minimum five (5) years of recent, progressive leadership experience in healthcare, long-term care, or a related setting.
- Current practicing registration in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Demonstrated knowledge of gerontological nursing, clinical operations, quality improvement, and healthcare regulations.
