SUMMARY:
Reports to and works under the direction of the Secondary School Principal or designate. Operates, maintains and promotes school based Career Centre. Works collaboratively with a variety of District staff and departments, as well as post-secondary institutions and scholarship and awards supporters, to provide current post-secondary education admission, scholarship, volunteer, and occupational information to students, parents, staff and community members.
DUTIES:
- Ensures that the school Career Centre contains up-to-date occupational, secondary, scholarship, post-secondary material and resources, and information pertaining to volunteer and community engagement opportunities. Selects and orders career related material; catalogues, codes and electronically file all materials received. Provides direction to students in the use of the career centre and materials and provides opportunities for parents to book appointments to discuss course planning, scholarships, post-secondary options and other relevant support for their children. Designs and constructs displays of career materials. Receives opportunity announcements and acts as a contact for employers and students.
- Researches, analyzes, interprets, and advises students about career, post-secondary and scholarship information. Meets with parents to assist with the post-graduation planning process.
- Schedules supervises, and assists students with completion of a variety of tests, including career and practice aptitude, trades training assessment; orders career centre testing materials as required.
- Plans and presents or assists in supervision of school and district events (career events, post-secondary presentations, course planning, Career Life Education courses, and capstone presentations, valedictory/commencement, scholarship functions, educational tours, etc.); prepares and creates written materials and handouts; arranges speakers for presentations.
- Develops and maintains electronic and print announcements, including website information, visual displays, newsletters, school and community news articles to promote career education activities and programs, exchange programs, post-secondary admission requirements, and relevant scholarship and award information.
- May guide and support students and staff on job search methods, resume preparation, interview tactics, labour market and occupational research, and application process; and, may conduct training sessions for students.
- Regularly attends post-secondary counsellor/advisor information and training sessions to remain current on program information and admission requirements; and advises and assists students with applications to post secondary institutions. Advocates for students with post secondary contacts throughout the application process.
- Publicizes, presents, and promotes scholarship and award program to students, parents, and staff; assists students with applications; and maintains computer data information on scholarships and recipients. May initiate opportunities and maintain contact with local businesses and agencies for funding and community-based scholarships. Organizes and coordinates scholarship nominations meetings as required.
- May act as liaison between outside agencies and the school. May advertise and promote volunteer and employment opportunities through newsletters, job board or other means.
- Works with Career Programs teachers to promote and provide support for Youth Work in Trades, Youth Train in Trades, Work Experience, and post-secondary transition programs.
- Responds to a wide variety of external/internal inquiries both by email, telephone and in person.
- Performs a variety of administrative duties, using a variety of software and District programs, as required to support the Career Centre.
- Remains current with changing technology, practices and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of post secondary courses in career counselling, career aptitude testing and interpersonal and group communications equivalent to 12 months at a college level.
- Familiarity with the Ministry of Education Graduation Program.
- Good interpersonal, organizational and communication (both written and oral) and industrial opportunities skills. Ability to use judgement and tact in providing information.
- Ability to organize and present information to a variety of groups and individuals.
- Ability to act on own initiative and to work independently.
- Skill in the operation and application of the designated computerized career programs.
- Knowledge of adolescent behaviour and psychology or experience working with secondary school age students is an asset.
- Experience and skill in word processing/data base/spreadsheet/presentation applications plus the operation of office equipment and audio-visual equipment.
- Physical ability to perform the duties required.
- Knowledge of WCB and WHMIS regulations. Safe work habits.
