Safehaven serves individuals with disabilities and their families, through respite and residential programs at our Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, Woodbridge, and Aurora facilities, as well as client homes.

You will be part of an outstanding team that is so passionate about the work we do.The Residential Support Worker (RSW) is a front-line role, providing supervision, care and developmental programming for clients who have complex medical needs, in a residential setting for the Safehaven Project for Community Living (Safehaven).
A key responsibility of this role is to assist residential and respite clients by providing staff supervision, care and developmental programming, as well as overseeing the personal care and upkeep for clients with complex medical needs in a residential or respite setting. This role provides direct care, medication administration, recreation, cooking, and upkeep at any of the 5 Safehaven locations. The RSW role also provides the vital responsibility as the primary caregiver to one (1) – two (2) clients in Safehaven care, acting at all times for the client’s health and best interest, and are key front-line leaders in the various Safehaven locations.
Reporting to the location Client Care Coordinator, RSWs work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team including Registered Practical Nurses, the Director, Programs & Professional Practice, and the Safehaven leadership team to ensure the highest quality of care and service delivery to the clients receiving service from Safehaven.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide for the daily living needs of up to twelve (12) clients by maintaining a safe environment with appropriate attention given to individual health, nutrition, hygiene and program plans;
- Perform a required secondary role with in the locations, with oversight and responsibility for one of the following vital roles: Occupational Health and Safety, Scheduling, Respite, Ordering, Property, Fire drills, Documentation, or Recreation.
- Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the physical environment, as aligned with the Safehaven policies and procedures, recording any concerns and documenting that cleaning has been completed as needed/specified;
- Supervise part time and elect-to-work staff in the absence of a Client Care Coordinator, including oversight of medication administration, documentation, and general care and upkeep of the location and ensures the quality of care provided to clients;
- Play a vital role in the completion of Ministerial Licensing, acting to ensure that documentation and all required interactions with Ministry representatives;
- Respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and faiths and religions in a manner that recognizes, affirms and values the worth of individuals, families and communities;
- Uphold a high standard of proper conduct and professionalism;
- Cooperate in maintaining complete and confidential case records for each client in care;
- Administer medications and maintains logs on all medical administration;
- Follow all health directives as assigned by health/medical professionals and the Client Care Coordinator;
- Accompany clients to therapeutic and recreational appointments as requested by the Client Care Coordinator, and liaises with community services, schools, and the family/guardians of clients as required;
- Attend employee meetings, training and education opportunities, and appointments as required;
- Cooperate with all employees in establishing a supportive working environment in the residential/respite setting;
- Follow all policies and procedures, established by the organization as they pertain to the operation of a location, including the health, safety and welfare of clients in care;

- Act as In-Charge employee as per schedule or as needed, to supervise part-time and elect-to-word employees as needed;
- Participate in professional development opportunities;
- Follow Health and Safety policies that are set out at Safehaven;
- Demonstrate a positive “health and safety” attitude, and reports any hazards to the Client Care Coordinator that the employee observes;
- Any other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in relevant area of study, preferably Developmental Service Worker, Social Services, or Social Work;
- One (1) – two (2) years related experience working with clients with complex medical needs, preferably at least two (2) - three (3) years of experience with Safehaven clients;
- Ability to efficiently arrange and perform a wide range of tasks;
- Ability to work under the pressure of a large and busy household;
- Ability to perform delegated tasks alone with minimal supervision;
- Ability to assume additional training in therapeutic needs of the clients, nutrition, pharmacology, CPR, first aid training, seizure identification and response, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training;
- Possess good team work, problem solving and written/verbal communication skills;
Ability to respond to a flexible work schedule involving shifts and/or emergency staffing needs in the residence and/or emergency needs of the clients in care.
