John Howard Society of Toronto is looking for a Human Resources Manager to join our team!

The John Howard Society of Toronto (JHST) provides programs to individuals who have been in conflict with the law or those at risk. Our goal is to make Toronto safer through programs that focus on crime prevention, intervention and reintegration. We have four offices in the Toronto area (Eglinton West, Danforth, Etobicoke and Scarborough).

Position: Human Resources Manager

Function: The Human Resources Manager is a key member of the leadership team committed to creating an exceptional employee experience while supporting the mission of the John Howard Society of Toronto (JHST). This position is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of all human resources functions, including human resources administration, labour and employee relations, collective agreement administration, recruitment and onboarding, performance management, occupational health and safety, training and development, legislative compliance, compensation and benefits administration, and policy development.

The Human Resources Manager serves as the organization's subject matter expert on employment legislation and labour relations, providing strategic advice and practical guidance to the Executive Director, Directors, managers, supervisors and employees. This role plays a critical leadership function in fostering a respectful, inclusive, high-performing workplace while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and collective agreements.

Schedule: Full-time ; 37.5 hours per week; Monday-Friday

Salary: Up to $80,000

Location: Hybrid- 360 Deerhide Crescent

Reports to: Executive Director

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

· Develop, implement and continuously improve Human Resources policies, procedures and best practices in accordance with employment legislation and organizational objectives.

· Translate the organization's strategic priorities into effective HR initiatives, workforce planning and talent management strategies.

· Develop annual HR operational plans, recruitment strategies, orientation programs, succession planning and employee engagement initiatives.

· Support organizational change initiatives and continuous improvement projects.

· Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, diversity, equity, inclusion and employee well-being.

Labour Relations

· Act as the organization's primary resource on labour relations matters within a unionized environment.

· Interpret, administer and ensure compliance with the Collective Agreement.

· Provide advice and coaching to managers regarding collective agreement interpretation, progressive discipline, attendance management, performance management and conflict resolution.

· Represent the organization during grievance meetings, labour-management meetings, mediations and arbitration preparation as required.

· Develop and maintain positive working relationships with union representatives while protecting the organization's interests.

· Support collective bargaining preparation, negotiations and implementation of negotiated agreements.

· Ensure consistent application of employment legislation, organizational policies and collective agreement provisions.

Human Resources Operations

· Lead all recruitment, selection, onboarding and orientation activities.

· Develop and maintain current job descriptions and organizational structures.

· Administer performance management, probationary reviews, coaching and employee development programs.

· Provide guidance regarding accommodations, return-to-work plans, attendance management and disability management.

· Conduct workplace investigations involving harassment, discrimination, workplace violence, policy violations and employee misconduct.

· Coordinate employee recognition, engagement and retention initiatives.

· Maintain HRIS records and ensure employee files remain accurate, confidential and compliant.

Health and Safety

· Coordinate the Joint Health and Safety Committee and ensure legislative compliance.

· Monitor and support workplace health and safety initiatives across all locations.

· Ensure appropriate reporting, investigations and corrective actions following workplace incidents.

· Develop health and safety policies, procedures and training programs.

Payroll, Benefits and Compensation

· Support payroll administration in partnership with Finance.

· Administer employee benefit programs and pension enrollment.

· Assist in compensation administration and wage structure reviews.

· Participate in annual budgeting related to salaries, benefits and HR initiatives.

· Leadership Support

· Provide expert advice to the Executive Director and leadership team on all HR and labour relations matters.

· Coach managers on employee performance, investigations, discipline, documentation and termination processes.

· Develop management training on employment legislation, collective agreement administration and supervisory best practices.

· Monitor emerging employment legislation, labour relations trends and HR best

Qualifications:

· Post-Secondary diploma/degree in Human Resources Management.

· 5+ years experience as a Human Resources Manager

· Proficient in Google Workspace or MS Office Suite (advanced knowledge of Google Docs/Word; intermediate Google Sheets/Excel and Google Slides/PowerPoint).

· CHRP or CHRL is preferred;

· Strong knowledge of provincial employment laws

· Experience working in a unionized social services or community agency is a definite asset

· Joint Health and Safety Certification is an asset

· Experience with Ceridian Dayforce

· Demonstrated cultural awareness and ability to integrate diversity into practice

· Ability to build constructive and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders

· Ability to take initiative; strong analytical and problem solving skills

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgement

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Demonstrative conflict management and mediation skills

· Experience supporting 24/7 operations and multiple work sites.

· Experience with workplace accommodation, WSIB, return-to-work planning and disability management.

· Experience conducting workplace investigations from intake through recommendations.

· Experience advising senior leadership and Boards on HR and labour relations issues.
