Full job description

About Us:

Since 1936, the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton (HSOMH) has been a safe haven for animals in need and a trusted resource for the people who care about them. We’re more than a shelter. We’re a community hub where compassion, education, and action come together to strengthen the human–animal bond.

At HSOMH, we care for approximately 300 animals at any given time, whether they are lost, rescued, or surrendered and awaiting their new beginning. Every animal that comes through our doors receives shelter, medical care, and the compassion they deserve.

People often walk through our doors expecting to adopt a pet, drop off a donation, or volunteer for a few hours. What they leave with is so much more: new connections, unexpected joy, and a lasting place in a community that cares deeply for pets and people alike.

What Would You Do?

Under the guidance of the Manager of Animal Services, the part-time Animal Control Officer plays a crucial role in the department's daily operations by providing coverage during absences such as vacations and sick leaves to ensure continuous support and assistance in addressing public inquiries. The officer will respond to animal-related emergencies and standard calls, offering information about animal control legislation and local by-laws to enhance customer service at the shelter.

An outline of the key responsibilities of this role has been listed below.

  • Responds promptly to animal-related emergencies calls
  • Retrieves deceased animals from roadways and parks, ensuring the proper and respectful handling of their remains.
  • Demonstrates humane and proficient techniques in capturing, handling, and restraining both wild and domestic animals, including those that are sick or injured, both within shelter facilities and in the community.
  • Transports animals to the shelter or other designated locations as instructed.
  • Ensures the daily well-being of animals in custody, encompassing tasks such as feeding, watering, grooming, and maintaining sanitary living conditions. Additionally, monitors and reports on their health and behavior.
  • Administers necessary animal health procedures and, when necessary, assists or performs euthanasia following established protocols.
  • Adheres to prescribed time response requirements as specified by the Town of Oakville.
  • Addresses public inquiries in a courteous and informative manner, whether in person, over the phone, or via email.
  • Prepares reports and diligently maintains records as part of routine responsibilities.
  • Assumes responsibility for the care and organization of animal service equipment and shelter vehicles to ensure they are in optimal condition.
  • Participates in shelter events as needed and actively promotes responsible pet ownership through the implementation of animal service programs for the public.
  • Performs any other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education in animal sciences, veterinary technology, animal welfare, criminal justice, and management is advantageous
  • Minimum 2 years of animal control experience

  • Possess a general understanding of investigative techniques, evidence collection, and legal procedures
