As a Deaf interpreter, you will play a vital role in ensuring that Deaf individuals can access essential services across various community settings, such as healthcare, legal environments, educational settings, and more.Your primary responsibility will be to facilitate communication between Deaf individuals and service providers, ensuring clear, accurate, and culturally appropriate interpretation in various situations. You will work to ensure that Deaf individuals have equal access to services and information in their preferred communication methods.
Key Responsibilities:
Interpretation: Provide accurate, clear, and professional interpretation for Deaf individuals in various settings, including healthcare, legal, educational, and community contexts. This may involve interpreting between American Sign Language (ASL) or other signed languages and spoken languages.- Cultural Sensitivity: Be aware of and sensitive to the diverse cultural and communication needs of the Deaf community. Ensure that interpretations maintain the meaning and tone of the original message while respecting the specific needs of clients.
- Facilitating Access to Services: Assist Deaf individuals in navigating essential services like healthcare, law enforcement, social services, and education, ensuring that they have equal access to information and assistance in their preferred communication methods.
- Remote Assignments: In addition to in-person assignments, you may also handle remote interpretation sessions via video or over-the-phone platforms, providing flexibility and the opportunity to work from home when applicable.
- Professionalism and Confidentiality: Maintain the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality, especially when interpreting sensitive or confidential information in healthcare, legal, or other private settings.
Requirements:
Experience in Deaf Interpretation: Previous experience or certification in Deaf interpreting, including knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), or other signed languages, is required.- Required Certifications: Candidates must have official certification in Deaf interpretation or related fields. Accepted certifications include:
Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) certification
Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, demonstrate empathy, and provide non-judgmental support to individuals from diverse backgrounds.- Cultural Awareness: A deep understanding of Deaf culture and the unique communication challenges faced by Deaf individuals.
- Transportation: The ability to travel to different locations for assignments, with reliable transportation (personal or public) necessary.
- Legal Eligibility: Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Training and Support:
Training: MCIS provides a free online training module for new interpreters, designed to prepare you for assignments. Completion of this training is required before starting work.- Experienced Interpreters: We welcome applications from experienced Deaf interpreters with certification in the field. Your expertise will be highly valued and appreciated.
