Assistant Chef - Private School

About Us

About the Role

As an Assistant Chef, you'll be at the heart of our community—prepping snacks, assisting with meals, maintaining a clean kitchen, and fostering a positive, food-forward experience for students.


Hours of Work: 8:00–8:30am to 3:00–3:30pm, Monday to Friday.


Perks of Working at Pear Tree

  • Probationary Salary: $37,000–$40,000 annually during your 3month probation.
  • PostProbation Salary: $40,000–$50,000 annually, based on performance review.
  • Higher Pay During Coverage: When assigned to cover for the Head Chef (e.g., during absences or summer program periods), you'll be paid at a chef coverage rate of $50,000–$60,000/year, pro-rated for the coverage period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Snack Preparation & Baking – Prepare and serve morning and afternoon snacks daily; baking experience is highly desirable.
  • Kitchen Assistance & Cleaning – Support the head chef by keeping the kitchen clean and organised, including washing dishes (dishwasher for most items, handwashing large items), and monitoring cleaning supply levels.
  • Food Preparation: Assist with vegetable prep and portioning daily meals.
  • Service & Engagement: Plate and serve food, interact with students, and answer their questions about the meals.
  • Chef Coverage (As Assigned): Trained candidates may be asked to manage the kitchen independently during Head Chef absences. (See Perks section for coverage pay rate.)

Qualifications

  • Previous commercial kitchen experience.
  • Diploma in Culinary Arts (or equivalent experience).
  • Some baking experience is highly desirable.
  • FoodSafe Level 1 required; FoodSafe Level 2 considered an asset.
  • Red Seal Certification (optional but preferred).
  • Driving license + clean record (asset).
  • Enjoyment of working around children.
  • Successful criminal record check required.
