THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST
For over 25 years, Canadian Rail Car Cleaners Inc. (CRCC) has provided rail car maintenance and pre-trip services to the railroads across southern Ontario, with a focus on safety and quality above all else. We are currently looking for three (3) Part-Time Railcar Pre-Trippers/Labourers to join our crew, working Fridays and Sundays (and other available shifts on a voluntary basis).
No prior railway experience is necessary. If you've worked in safety-conscious outdoor manual labour environments, like landscaping, construction, agriculture, warehousing, moving, freight, or similar, we can train you.
WHAT THE JOB IS
Part-time work at our pre-trip operations located in Alliston, working Fridays and Sundays. 8-hour morning shifts starting at 4:00 AM. $23.29/hour to start, increasing to $25.28/hour after 90 days. 16 guaranteed hours per week, with additional shifts regularly available on a voluntary basis.
SHIFT INFORMATION
- Working Fridays and Sundays, 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM (8 hours each day, at least 16 paid hours/week guaranteed).
- Additional shifts regularly become available throughout the week to cover vacations, absences, etc.
TRAINING PERIOD
Training is fully paid. We prefer to train new hires for the first 1-2 weeks on a Monday-to-Friday, full-time hours basis. This significantly shortens ramp-up and helps you start your regular Friday/Sunday shifts sooner with confidence. Alternative training arrangements can be considered if you cannot accommodate full-time training hours upon hire (discuss with us during the interview.)
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Open and close rail car doors, raise decks, and clean dirt and debris from multi-level autorack rail cars
- Inspect rail car doors, decks, grating, and tie-down tracks for damage; report issues
- Inspect, organize, and replace wheel chocks
- Load, unload, and restock the pre-trip vehicle
- Operate tools and equipment inside rail cars, including backpack blowers
- Maintain yard and facility cleanliness
- Work as part of a small, experienced crew under direct supervision
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- Safety-conscious mindset and good decision-making
- Previous experience in outdoor manual labour, industrial, or similar work environments
- Valid Ontario G2 or higher driver's licence (required; you will be driving work trucks within the rail yard)
- Reliable transportation to the work site (it is not located on any public transit routes)
- Comfort working independently and as part of a team
- Ability to pass railway industry safety testing and a security background check upon hire (costs covered by the company); credentials must be renewed every 3 years
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job is labour-intensive and you will be required to:
- Lift, carry, and pull with at least 50 lbs of force repeatedly throughout the shift
- Climb ladders and use three-point contact to access multiple levels of rail cars
- Cross between bunched rail cars safely
- Constant bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and overhead lifting
- Stand and walk throughout the shift
- Hear well enough to be aware of track movement and communication devices
- Be comfortable with heights, climbing, and partially enclosed spaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Outdoor work, year-round, including hot summers and cold winters
- 4:00 AM start time; you must be reliably able to start work at this hour
- Subject to dust, dirt, and loud noises (full PPE provided and must be worn)
- Industrial rail yard environment with active rail equipment
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- $500.00 post-probation completion bonus (paid in the first pay period following successful 90-day probation)
- Wage increase to $25.28/hour after successful completion of 90-day probation, and regular annual increases thereafter
- PPE, safety gear and work clothing provided upon hire
- Boot allowance ($425.00/year for safety boots and related items)
- 16 guaranteed paid hours per week, plus additional voluntary shift opportunities
- Paid statutory holidays per the collective agreement
- Vacation pay accrual (4% of wages)
ABOUT THE UNION
This is a unionized position with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1006A. Union dues are deducted in accordance with the collective agreement at a rate of $20.42 bi-weekly (per pay).
APPLICATIONS
Please apply through Indeed only. In your application message, please briefly tell us:
- What's the earliest you can start, and

We thank all applicants for their interest. Due to time constraints, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
