Full job description

This is a unique opportunity to work within an innovative not-for-profit, in an environment that is committed to promoting continuous learning, creativity and collaboration.

Working both within the clinics at supportive housing sites, and in our mobile outreach vans, the RN provides client centred primary health care services to individuals and communities who face structural barriers to accessing health services and who experience a wide range of acute and chronic health challenges. The RN will use a harm reduction approach while working with clients living in poverty, with chronic mental illness and/or substance use issues. They will be required to have sufficient clinical skills and experience to independently assess clients with complex health and socioeconomic needs while successfully functioning as part of the integrated primary health care team.

The Nurse will be responsible for providing client centred care which takes into consideration the systemic barriers associated with poverty, mental health, substance use, histories of trauma, colonialism and gender discrimination. The successful applicant should have an understanding of the principles of culturally competent care and trauma informed care. Due to the client type, strong de-escalation skills will be required.

A narrow selection of the larger scope and responsibilities for the Nurse position are as follows:

  • Assess and triage clients presenting with acute medical concerns such as chest pain, respiratory difficulty, or trauma. Direct care appropriately following assessment either internally within the clinic or to the appropriate health care setting (i.e. ER).
  • Assess and triage clients presenting with acute mental health concerns. Knowledge of protocols around clients presenting with suicidal ideation and/or homicidal ideation.
  • Independent testing and counselling for sexually transmitted and blood borne infections. Specifically certified practice in testing, pre and post counselling for HIV and hepatitis C.
  • Ability to provide wound assessment and care for both chronic and acute wounds.
  • Administration of publicly funded vaccines according to BCCDC guidelines.
  • Assessment and care for women’s health including providing internal exams and knowledge of common birth control methods and medications.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in a community multi-disciplinary setting with a variety of acute and chronic illnesses/diseases including:
    • Communicable Diseases.
    • Substance Use.
    • Mental Health.
    • HIV/AIDS.
  • Certified Practice for Sexually Transmitted Infections, or willingness to take course.
  • HIV Testing and Pre/Post Test Counseling Certification (BCCDC or Equivalent) or willingness to take online course

Requirements

  • Current registration with the British Colombia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Successful completion of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Record Check.

  • Hourly Wage Rate: $43.99 - $61.45, commensurate with experience.
  • Work Location: 713 Johnson Street. – Cool Aid Health Centre, and outreach locations.
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday
  • Shift Times:
    • Full-Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
    • Part-Time: Flexible within 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Weekly Hours:
    • Full-Time: 35
    • Part-Time: 28
  • Union: Exempt
  • Job Type: Full-Time or Part-Time, Permanent
