Job Summary: Quest Care and Recreation Staff

Calgary Quest Children’s Society has been a leader in special education within Calgary and the surrounding communities for over 30 years. We currently serve our children and young people in three service areas:

★ Quest School: a K-12 school providing tailored education for students with exceptional needs
★ Centre for Opportunity: a program for young adults working towards greater independence
★ Care and Recreation: Before and After School Care, Holiday Care, and Quest Adventure Camp

At Quest Care and Recreation, you have the opportunity to change the lives of students aged 6-19 with disabilities by acting as a mentor, caregiver, and role model. Care and Recreation Staff support the Before and After School Care program, and Holiday Care on PD days and school breaks. They also have the opportunity to work at Quest Adventure Camp through the summer.

This position involves supervising children and youth living with developmental disabilities in multi-disciplinary activities and games, as well as assisting children with daily life needs and personal care and supporting their developmental goals. We create an inclusive, caring environment for students of ALL ability levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Keep students safe at all times
• Support all aspects of student well-being: physical, social, emotional, and developmental
• Maintain constant vigilance in supervision of assigned students
• Facilitate child-led activities and model enthusiastic participation
• Work with the team, collaborating with colleagues and program manager, as well as school classroom and administrative staff
• Provide morning and afternoon snacks
• Responsible for all activity preparation, set up and clean up
• Perform regular cleaning and sanitizing duties in compliance with provincial health and safety guidelines
• Work with students with diverse communication abilities, including non-verbal campers and those using communication devices
• Observe and assess student behaviour and respond appropriately, including challenging and potentially aggressive behaviour
• Manage crisis situations effectively and document all incidents
• Demonstrate responsibility with confidential and sensitive information
• Follow training to support students with additional medical and personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and diaper changing
• Demonstrate professional conduct with colleagues, students, parents, and members of the public as a representative of Quest

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum 18 years of age
• Legally able to work in Canada
• Completed High School Diploma
• Caring, friendly, fun, patient and enthusiastic personality
• Reliable, punctual, and professional
• Commitment to providing an exceptional child-care experience for students of a wide range of ages and ability levels
• Experience working with children or youth diagnosed with special needs between the ages of 6-19 years is an asset, but not required
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Availability for split shifts on school days- 6:45 to 9:00 am, 3:00 to 6:00 pm
• Availability for full days on PD days and school breaks
• A current and clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification
• Food Safety Basics certification
• Class 4 (commercial) driving license is a strong asset, or willingness to obtain

Position details:
This is a part-time, split-shift position and is paid monthly. There may be opportunities for successful candidates to work additional hours in other service areas. The position is classified as a non-exempt hourly employee status and will be between 2 and 40 hours per week. The hours worked on a daily basis vary; a work schedule will be issued.

Hours are Monday to Friday:

• Before care shifts start at 6:45am to 9:00 am, after care shifts are from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
• Holiday Care coverage will be an 6-10 hour shift between the hours of 6:45am to 6:00pm
• Monthly daytime team meetings, and additional support shifts such as deep cleaning

Shifts take place at both Quest School locations:

• Barlow- 3030 2 Ave SE, Calgary
• Sunalta- 1817 10 Ave SW, Calgary
