Full job description

Are you someone who enjoys connecting with people, staying organized, and keeping things running smoothly in a fast-paced environment? At Canada's National Ballet School, every role helps support a vibrant and creative community - and we'd love for you to be part of it! NBS is excited to invite applications for the part-time contract position of Cashier to join our Food Services team. If you're friendly, reliable, and enjoy working with people in a busy café environment, this could be a great fit for you.

About Us:
Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) is a leading arts and education institution dedicated to excellence in dance training, community programming, and health initiatives. With 300+ employees, NBS supports programs ranging from professional ballet training to groundbreaking community and health initiatives. At NBS, we foster a collaborative, creative environment rooted in inclusion, innovation, and continuous growth - and every team member plays an important role in supporting our vibrant community.

The Role:
Under the leadership of the Venue and Food Operations Manager, the Cashier helps create a welcoming café experience for students, staff, and guests at the Mona Campbell Square Café. From serving coffee and snacks to processing transactions and keeping the café organized and well-stocked, you'll play an important role in the daily rhythm of the NBS community.

This is a fast-paced, customer-focused role where no two shifts are exactly alike. One moment you might be helping a student between classes, and the next you could be restocking café items, processing transactions, answering questions, or preparing for a busy lunch rush. If you enjoy staying active, connecting with people throughout the day, and balancing multiple tasks in a collaborative environment, this role may be a great match for your strengths and working style!

Why You'll Love This Role:
  • Be part of a friendly and collaborative Food Services team
  • Connect with students, staff, and guests in a welcoming café environment
  • Build valuable customer service, cash handling, and food service experience
  • Stay active in a fast-paced and team-oriented workplace
  • Gain experience in a creative and community-focused organization
  • Opportunities to get involved in employee-led initiatives like our EDI and Social Committees
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Help open and close café operations by stocking, replenishing, organizing, and preparing service areas throughout the day
  • Prepare and serve coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, salads, snacks, and beverages to student sand customers
  • Operate the cash register and accurately process cash, debit, and credit transactions
  • Maintain transaction records, reconcile cash, and assist with preparing deposits
  • Provide friendly, efficient, and professional customer service while answering questions and supporting guests
  • Help maintain clean, organized, and sanitary café and dining areas by following food safety and sanitation best practices
  • Monitor café supplies and help ensure service areas remain stocked and organized during busy service periods
  • Follow health & safety procedures and support a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and guests
  • Balance multiple tasks throughout shifts, including customer service, restocking, cleaning, and cashier responsibilities
  • Jump in wherever needed to support the team and contribute to the success of the Food Services Department
  • Take on other duties as assigned - we're all part of making the experience great
Qualifications/Skills/Experience
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years' experience providing excellent customer service
  • Previous experience operating cash registers and point of sale systems preferred
  • Food Handler Certificate and Smart Serve Certification are considered assets
  • Strong numerical, organizational, and basic computer skills
  • Confidence in handling cash and payment transactions accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, and thrive in a fast-paced school and café environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a friendly and professional approach
  • Comfortable interacting with school-aged children, students, staff, and guests
  • Knowledge of food service practices, food handling, and point of sale systems
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to problem-solve in a busy environment
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to jump in wherever needed to support the team
We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every qualification listed. If you're enthusiastic, dependable, and excited to be part of a supportive and creative community, we'd love to hear from you!

Compensation Rate: $17.95 per hour
Contract Dates: September 1, 2026 - July 30, 2027 with the possibility of an extension
