INDIGENOUS RELATIONS ADVISOR

JOB OVERVIEW
We are looking for an Indigenous Relations Advisor who is a team player with strong communication, organization and planning skills as well as interpersonal abilities and is interested in building their career and enjoying what they do each day at work. This is a great opportunity for a motivated, energetic individual who wants to challenge their abilities in a dynamic work environment.
The Indigenous Relations Advisor will provide support to the Indigenous Relations Manager on Indigenous relations activities on behalf of our clients and may support other projects as needed. Activities include administrative support, relationship building on behalf of clients, working with Indigenous communities, supporting negotiations, developing agreements, researching land tenure, understanding potential impacts to First Nations, and offering potential mitigation to impacts.
KEY RESPOSIBILITIES:
Working on Indigenous Consultation:
- Engages in consultation and communication to keep Indigenous communities informed about proposed activities and to gather their input on interests and concerns.
- Contributes to negotiations with Indigenous communities by conducting thorough research, taking meticulous notes, and following up.
- Develops strong relationships with Indigenous communities to facilitate the exchange of information and to create opportunities.
- Maintains consultation documentation, including letters, records of consultation, and reports, ensuring they meet a high standard.
- Coordinates consultation meetings with Indigenous communities and project teams, ensuring adherence to established processes, timely completion, and effective reporting of outcomes.
- Provides administrative support, including maintaining consultation documentation, preparing and sending letters to communities, taking meeting minutes, saving and updating project files, updating records of consultation, and reviewing invoices and financial reports.
- Prepares and distributes high quality, accurate and timely documents such as: agendas, status reports, minutes, communication logs, and other required documentation.
- Collaborates with Project Managers and project team members to support project objectives by providing regular status updates, preparing contract language for tenders, updating construction schedules, coordinating letters of agreement, and managing other project-related activities.
- Supports our client and Senior Indigenous Advisor on Indigenous Consultation requests, which includes projects, maintenance, development approvals, road closures, and property disposition.
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCY:
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in indigenous studies, geography, archaeology, anthropology, political science, business administration or related field. Should someone with a lower level of education wish to apply, consideration will be given based on experience and previous roles held.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Ability to build relationships with Indigenous communities, through respectful communication, willingness to understand diverse perspectives and a commitment to developing common ground while working through potential conflicts.
- Emotional intelligence to work with a broad range of different types of people, including, Indigenous groups, technical experts, government officials, legal counsels, public stakeholders, and other project partners.
- Possess excellent organizational skills, administrative support skills, time-management skills, thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
- Understanding and interest in local Indigenous rights, treaties, Section 35 regulatory processes, and the duty to consult.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and assignments.
- Strong abilities to assist with coordination of multiple priorities on complex projects with time sensitive deliverables.
Typical office environment working with computers and field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
