Position Summary

Temporary Part-Time Support Staff, new position (August 24, 2026 to November 30, 2026)

The Athletic Therapist provides injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency medical support to Conestoga varsity student-athletes. The incumbent plays a key role in promoting athlete health, wellness, injury prevention, and safe participation in sport. This position involves both clinical and field-based responsibilities, including the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, the development of rehabilitation programs, and the provision of emergency care during practices and competitions.

Successful candidates must be available to work on-site, primarily at Conestoga’s Doon campus, located at 299 Doon Valley Dr., in Kitchener, with regular travel to additional facilities in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge for varsity practices and competitions. The Athletic Therapist will be scheduled for 24 hours per week, with shifts assigned between Monday and Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Shifts may vary based on varsity practice and competition schedules.

Responsibilities

Clinical assessment and treatment

  • Provide clinical assessment of musculoskeletal injuries of Conestoga varsity athletes (assessments of all acute, insidious, and chronic injuries)
  • Complete musculoskeletal assessments (body mechanics and movement) of all incoming athletes
  • Treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries of student athletes during in-clinic appointments utilizing exercise, therapeutic modalities, manual therapy, education, sport-specific movements, etc.
  • Use advanced rehabilitative practices to both prevent injury and re-injury
  • Refer varsity athletes to Sports Medicine Physicians or other healthcare providers

Emergency response

  • Attend varsity practices and league games to provide on-field emergency care to varsity students
  • Prepare emergency action plans for home games, tournaments, and when travelling with teams
  • Apply preventative taping and wrapping for varsity practices and games
  • Assess and manage head injuries (concussions, etc.), follow up with the medical team, and advance through return to academics and sport
  • Attend to acute musculoskeletal injuries (fractures, sprains, strains, etc.) during varsity games and practice
  • Attend to emergency situations (anaphylaxis, fractures, shock, etc.) during varsity competition
  • Tend to any injured athlete or student with first responder qualifications in the Student Recreation Centre

Medical notes, policies and processes

  • Complete required paperwork in accordance with the supervisor’s request, including medical notes, emergency action plans, incident reports, pre-physical exam collection, attending doctor’s appointments, concussion assessment and management, etc.
  • Collaborate and communicate with health care providers and high-performance staff such as Sports Medicine Physicians, Surgeons, Nutritionists, Chiropractors, Strength & Conditioning Specialists, Bracing Consultants, etc., to benefit the overall well-being of varsity student athletes

Other

  • Source medical and therapeutic equipment
  • Travel to varsity competitions provincially and nationally
  • Complete all required courses for Ontario College Athletic Association and Canadian College Athletic Association compliance (safe sport, concussion, etc.)

Qualifications

  • A four-year degree in Athletic Therapy, Health Sciences, Kinesiology, or a related field at an institution accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) is required
  • Minimum two years of experience in a post-secondary, high-performance, or equivalent setting, assessing musculoskeletal injuries and implementing comprehensive rehabilitation programs to athletes, is required
  • Must be a Certified Athletic Therapist with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association
  • First Responder certification through an accredited provider is required
  • Registration with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario is considered an asset
  • Continuing education, workshops, and/or certifications in manual therapy techniques preferred
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel to multiple campuses and off-site events
