About Us:

Beamdog, a leading video game studio based in Edmonton, Alberta, has been creating captivating gaming experiences since 2009. Founded by industry veterans Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer, the studio has become renowned for developing enhanced editions of classic games and original content across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and mobile devices. Best known for reviving iconic Dungeons & Dragons RPGs like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, Beamdog is dedicated to delivering unforgettable experiences for gamers worldwide.


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Art Lead or Art Director, the Concept Artist is responsible for creating and rapidly iterating on clean, purposeful visual development work while also supporting downstream production art needs. This role requires strong visual aesthetics, excellent design sensibilities, and the ability to clearly render both characters and environments. The artist will help shape the visual direction of the project, support the development team, and contribute both exploratory concept work and practical production-ready artwork across a range of project needs.


This position is full time
in-office based out of Edmonton, Alberta.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help develop and refine the visual style for the project.
  • Produce concept art that clearly communicates stylistic language, gameplay intentions, and world-building details to the development team.
  • Collaborate with Art Director to determine scope, content, and requirements for concept pieces.
  • Iterate quickly using sketches, roughs, and 3D block-ins to provide multiple directional options for the Art Director.
  • Create polished concept art for characters, environments, and key moments.
  • Generate a variety of 2D assets such as paint-overs, mood concepts, callout sheets, photobashed sketches, and portrait art.
  • Produce art for pitch decks, Kickstarter campaigns, and other basic marketing materials as needed.
  • Create in-game UI elements, including character portraits, icons and other 2D interface assets.
  • Ensure art quality meets expectations and aligns with direction provided by leads.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a cohesive visual style throughout the project.
  • Participate in pipelines, reviews, and collaborative production processes.

Education and Core Skills Requirements:


  • Strong proficiency with Photoshop, Illustrator, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience understanding and working within game development pipelines.
  • Degree, diploma, or certificate in Art, Illustration, Animation, or Design (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven portfolio demonstrating a strong range of styles and high-quality visual development work.
  • Texturing skills and experience working with Unreal, or other game engines is a strong plus / desirable.
  • Experience with Maya Blender or other 3D DCC packages is a strong plus / desirable.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong sense of color, composition, and visual design.
  • Ability to bring characters and environments to life with personality and clarity.
  • Ability to take a concept from initial idea to final polished artwork.
  • High creativity, imagination, and visual storytelling ability.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
