Full job description

As a Tier 2 IT Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical support to clients, system implementation, and management of IT networks. You will be expected to work autonomously on tier-2 level tasks.

  • Providing top-tier customer service to clients.
  • Testing and evaluating new systems and software.
  • Client communication & task management.
  • Documenting support activities and maintaining accurate records.
  • Role is in-person in Abbotsford office servicing clients in the Fraser Valley.
  • Role is full time, though there may be opportunity for part-time as well.

Compensation

  • Compensation: $50-70k depending on abilities and fulfillment of the rest of this job description
  • PHSP health plan to be allocated as you see fit
  • Day-off for your birthday
  • Two weeks vacation in first year, Three weeks vacation in second year, Four weeks vacation in fifth year

Experience

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A degree in computing or demonstrable equivalent ability
  • Around 3 years of experience in a related role or demonstrable equivalent ability
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness to learn and solve challenges with a growth mindset
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to explain technical situations to clients in plain English, and share the relevant factors and consequences so they can make informed decisions
  • Strong rapport with clients
  • A reliable and presentable vehicle and a license to drive it
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check

Skills & Technologies

The more of these technologies and systems you’re proficient with, the better. You will have opportunities to learn the systems you aren’t already familiar with.

  • Windows Server and its functions such as Active Directory, Group Policy, File Services, Remote Desktop, Printer Server, etc.
  • Linux servers including CLI interfaces. Mostly, we use Debian or Ubuntu
  • Windows and Mac workstations
  • Microsoft 365, Intune, Teams, Defender, and Azure
  • SQL Servers including Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Postgres, and the SQL language
  • Storage systems such as Synology, QNAP, iSCSI, NFS, hyperconvergence, SANs
  • Exchange Server (just kidding)
  • Email technologies including SMTP, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, Encryption
  • Google Workspace
  • Virtualization technologies such as Hyper-V and Proxmox but not ESXi (RIP)
  • Scripting with Powershell, or bash
  • Remote connection tools such as Screenconnect, SSH, RDP, Splashtop, VNC
  • Cybsecurity protections including EDR, DNS Filtering, IPS, DLP, etc.
  • Backup solutions such as Acronis, Cove, Altaro, Backblaze
  • Terminating RJ45 keystones & ends, wiring patch panels, tracing and labeling wires
  • Retro Encabulators such as the one made by Rockwell
  • Networking ecosystems including Fortinet, Unifi, PFSense, OPNSense, Microtik
  • Networking protocols and systems such as TCP/UDP, IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, ZTNA, OSPF, SSL, RFC2549, etc.
  • Telephony systems including SIP, Asterisk, or 3CX
  • Printers and scanners including scan-to-email, scan-to-cloud, defenestration because printers are the worst
  • MSP platforms including PSAs, RMMs, MDMs, Documentation, etc.
  • Sledgehammers and light explosives for secure deprecation of particularly frustrating printers

Capabilities

The more of these things you can do, the better:

  • Troubleshoot all workstation technical issues
  • Troubleshoot nearly-all single-site network issues
  • Troubleshoot most server technical issues
  • Troubleshoot some campus or multi-site network issues
  • Troubleshoot some distributed or cluster server issues
  • Rap the full theme song to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
  • Set up a new basic business network with device connectivity, on-prem Windows server, 365, and security
  • Prevent and respond to viruses, ransomware, and other cybsecurity breaches
  • Configuring and manage Microsoft Office 365, Azure, Entra ID, Intune, Google Workspace
  • Migrate businesses from Google Workspace to Office 365 or vice versa
  • Build and test a PC from scratch. Even better if you can build a server too. More RGB, more better.
  • Integrate, configure, and provision SAAS and line-of-business apps for clients
  • Configuring and managing hypervisors and related networking
  • Hit an HP Laserjet from 100 yards with 3x optics and a 5km/h crosswind.
  • Writing PowerShell or bash scripts to automate tasks or process data.
  • (Fine to use AI as long as you can proofread/correct the output)
  • Explain technical options to clients in a way that empowers them to make an informed decision for their business
  • Configuring and managing backup and disaster recovery solutions. Write Disaster Recovery Plans
  • Install Windows 11 without using a Microsoft account
  • Produce good documentation both for internal use and for clients
  • Teach and mentor junior staff
