ESTIMATOR – STRUCTURED CABLING / LOW VOLTAGE

Location: Remote – Ontario
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $50,000–$80,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications

About JcoM Communications

JcoM Communications Inc. is a growing structured cabling and low-voltage communications company providing services across Ontario. We specialize in structured cabling, fibre optics, CCTV, wireless, VoIP, cell boosters, and other low-voltage infrastructure.

We are looking for an Estimator to join our growing team and take ownership of our estimating and tender process. This is a remote position with the opportunity to play a significant role in increasing our capacity to pursue and win new work.

The ideal candidate will have experience estimating structured cabling, low voltage, or electrical projects. We are also interested in candidates with strong construction estimating experience, particularly those comfortable reviewing large tender packages, drawings, specifications, and bid requirements.

The Opportunity

This position can be tailored to the successful candidate's level of experience.

For a less experienced estimator, we are prepared to provide training and support while you develop your estimating skills within the structured cabling industry.

For an experienced estimator, we are looking for someone who can take ownership of the majority of the estimating process with minimal supervision.

You will work closely with our Vice President and Project Management team to prepare accurate, competitive, and profitable bids.

Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Takeoffs

  • Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and tender documents.
  • Complete material and labour takeoffs.
  • Estimate cable quantities, pathways, devices, equipment, and associated materials.
  • Obtain and compare supplier pricing.
  • Develop accurate labour and material costs.
  • Identify project requirements, exclusions, assumptions, and potential risks.
  • Prepare detailed estimates and quotations.
  • Assist with pricing change orders and additional work.

Tender Management

  • Monitor and review available tender opportunities.
  • Determine which projects are appropriate for JcoM to pursue.
  • Download and organize tender documents.
  • Track tender deadlines, addenda, questions, and submission requirements.
  • Prepare and submit bids before deadlines.
  • Maintain an organized bid calendar and estimating pipeline.
  • Follow up on submitted quotations where appropriate.

Project Review & Site Surveys

  • Review project requirements and identify information needed before pricing.
  • Participate in site surveys when required.
  • Coordinate with JcoM field staff to collect site information, measurements, and photographs.
  • Identify site conditions that may affect labour, materials, access, scheduling, or project costs.

Note: This is primarily a remote position. Site surveys will generally be completed by JcoM field personnel, with the estimator participating remotely when appropriate. Occasional travel may be required for larger or more complex projects.

Proposal Development

  • Prepare professional quotations and proposals.
  • Clearly identify scope of work, exclusions, assumptions, and pricing.
  • Ensure estimates are complete and accurately reflect the tender requirements.
  • Work with management to review larger or more complex opportunities before submission.

Estimating Systems & Processes

As you become established in the role, you will help JcoM improve and develop our estimating process, including:

  • Standard estimating templates.
  • Labour production rates.
  • Material cost databases.
  • Historical project pricing.
  • Bid tracking.
  • Supplier pricing information.
  • Estimating procedures and best practices.

QualificationsPreferred Experience

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience estimating structured cabling or low-voltage projects.
  • Experience with fibre optics, data cabling, CCTV, wireless, access control, or similar systems is an asset.
  • Experience reviewing construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience completing construction takeoffs.
  • Experience pricing labour and materials.
  • Strong understanding of construction tender processes.

Other Relevant Experience

We will also consider candidates with:

  • Electrical estimating experience.
  • Construction estimating experience.
  • Experience preparing large tender bids.
  • Experience working for an electrical or communications contractor.
  • Experience with commercial construction projects.

A strong construction estimator with excellent attention to detail and the ability to learn the low-voltage industry may be a great fit even without direct structured cabling experience.

Technical Skills

Experience with the following is considered an asset:

  • Procore
  • Jobber
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365
  • Construction estimating software
  • Tender/bid platforms
  • Reading architectural, electrical, and communications drawings

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable working independently.
  • Able to manage multiple bids and deadlines.
  • Strong with numbers and cost analysis.
  • Comfortable reading construction drawings.
  • A strong communicator.
  • Proactive about identifying missing information or potential risks.
  • Able to work under tender deadlines.
  • Interested in developing and improving estimating processes.
  • Accountable for producing accurate, complete, and timely estimates.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who takes ownership of their work.

You don't need to know everything about structured cabling on day one. We can teach the right person our systems, standards, and approach. What we need is someone with strong estimating fundamentals, attention to detail, and the ability to learn.

Compensation & Benefits

$50,000–$80,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

The successful candidate's salary will reflect their ability to independently manage the estimating process.

Candidates with limited direct estimating experience may start toward the lower end of the range, while an experienced structured cabling, low-voltage, electrical, or construction estimator capable of independently managing complex tenders can expect compensation toward the upper end.

Benefits include:

  • Health and dental benefits.
  • Fully remote work environment.
  • Company-provided computer and required software.
  • Training and industry-specific support.
  • Opportunities for professional growth.

Why Join JcoM?

JcoM is at an exciting stage of growth. We have established crews in Ottawa and Belleville, work throughout Ontario, and are actively expanding our project and customer base.

This isn't a position where you'll simply be handed estimates and told what to do.

You'll have the opportunity to help build the estimating department from the ground up, develop our processes, influence how we pursue new work, and become an important part of the company's future growth.

If you're an experienced estimator looking for more ownership, or a construction estimator looking to transition into the structured cabling and low-voltage industry, we'd like to hear from you.

To apply: Please submit your resume and a brief description of your estimating experience and the types of projects you have estimated.
