Job Title: Commercial Structured Cabling Technician

Job Summary

The Commercial Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, upgrading, and repairing low-voltage cabling systems in commercial, healthcare, industrial, and data center environments. This role focuses on structured cabling infrastructure including Cat 5e/6/6A, fiber optic systems, backbone risers, patch panels, racks, cabinets, and telecommunications rooms.
Technicians ensure all work meets building codes, healthcare compliance requirements, safety regulations, and industry standards while delivering highly reliable network and communication systems for mission-critical facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install structured cabling systems in hospitals, data centers, office towers, warehouses, retail, and multi-story buildings.
  • Run backbone and horizontal cabling (Cat 5e/6/6A, fiber) through ceilings, walls, conduits, risers, cable trays, and raised floors.
  • Install, terminate, and dress patch panels, racks, cabinets, ladder racks, and fiber enclosures.
  • Perform fiber splicing, testing, and certification.
  • Label, document, and verify all cabling to meet TIA/EIA, BICSI, and customer specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, riser diagrams, and network schematics.
  • Work in live environments while maintaining uptime and infection-control standards in hospitals.
  • Coordinate with IT staff, project managers, electricians, and general contractors.
  • Troubleshoot and repair cabling faults in critical systems.
  • Complete rewires, network expansions, equipment relocations, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Maintain accurate test results, as-built drawings, and service documentation.
  • Identify workflow improvements to reduce project time and material waste.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all site-specific safety, healthcare, and data center access protocols.
  • Use PPE and follow fall protection, ladder safety, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Identify hazards and apply proper risk controls.
  • Report all incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years experience in structured cabling, low-voltage, or commercial construction.
  • Experience working in hospitals, data centers, or mission-critical facilities is an asset.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, riser diagrams, and schematics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Cat 5e/6/6A and fiber optic cabling systems.
  • Experience with racks, cabinets, patch panels, ladder racks, and cable management.
  • Understanding of commercial building construction and pathways.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation.
  • Professional, dependable, and safety-focused.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and testing records.

Working Conditions
