Residential Counsellor/Ability Support Assistant

Job Type: 4 Part-time (60-70 hrs/2weeks) Primarily daytime shifts, 1-3 Casual/Reserve

Salary: Step 1 $24.76/hour - Step 6 $27.52/hour

Responsibilities and Duties

As part of a team you:

· Support Participants (adults with intellectual/physical disabilities) at home and in the community

· Teach, supervise, and support all activities of daily living

· Encourage and organize activities that contribute to skill development, socialization, and fun

· Transport Participants in organizational vehicles

· Build positive, healthy relationships in the workplace

Minimum Qualifications

· Preferred: University degree or a graduate of a recognized Human Services, Recreational Therapy or related program such as CCA.

· Asset: Possession or willingness to obtain all 7 Provincial Core Competencies (Fire & Life Safety, Health & Personal Care, Medication Awareness, Individual Program Planning, Crisis Intervention, Behavioural Supports, Standard First Aid/ CPR-C) & Food Handler’s certificate)

· Asset: Experience working with or supporting people living with a physical and/or intellectual disability

· Demonstrated experience developing appropriate relationships in a helping or supporting capacity

· Effective oral and written communication skills

· Asset: Alternative communication abilities

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

· Valid NS Driver’s License

· Possession or willingness to obtain Class 4 driver’s license, must have a Class 5.

· Acceptable Driving record/abstract

· Suitable Criminal Records Check & Vulnerable Sector Search

-Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or possess a valid work permit).

Work Environment

· Shift work including days, evenings, overnight (awake), overnight (asleep), weekends, holidays.

· May be required to lift in relation to household activities and physically assisting participants

· May be exposed to bodily fluids, viruses & common illnesses
