About Us:
Burloak Technologies is a leader in the additive manufacturing industry and provides engineering services for additive manufacturing, materials development, high precision CNC machining and metrology. Burloak Technologies works with the most innovative companies in the space, aerospace, automotive and industrial markets to rapidly transition their most challenging part designs to be additively manufactured at scale.
Position Summary:
The Senior Quality Technician / CMM Programmer is responsible for programming and operating Zeiss CMM systems to perform dimensional inspection and validation of complex, high-precision components in support of aerospace and advanced manufacturing programs. This role develops and maintains inspection programs, performs incoming, in-process, and final inspections, and ensures all products meet engineering specifications, GD&T requirements, and AS9100 quality standards.
Working closely with Engineering, CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing, Planning, and Quality teams, the Senior Quality Technician / CMM Programmer provides technical expertise in metrology, supports root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives, and mentors junior technicians on CMM programming and inspection best practices. The successful candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while maintaining the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
CMM Programming and Metrology
- Program complex inspection routines using Zeiss Calypso CMM software, developing efficient and accurate measurement strategies based on part geometry, GD&T requirements, and specified tolerances.
- Operate Zeiss CMM systems to perform dimensional validation on complex precision components, ensuring results are accurate, repeatable, and fully traceable to engineering requirements.
- Review engineering drawings and model-based definitions to determine the most appropriate inspection approach for each component, considering datum structure, feature accessibility, and tolerance stack-up.
- Apply optical 3D scanning technologies such as Zeiss ATOS and Keyence systems where applicable to supplement contact measurement and support first article and complex geometry inspection activities.
- Maintain CMM programs and inspection libraries, updating routines as part designs are revised and ensuring all programs reflect the current approved engineering release.
Inspection and Quality Assurance
- Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections on machined, additive, and post-processed components, using CMM, hand tools, and optical measurement systems as appropriate to the inspection plan.
- Interpret and apply GD&T callouts from engineering drawings and model data with a high level of accuracy, ensuring inspection results are evaluated against the correct tolerance requirements.
- Document all inspection results thoroughly and accurately, maintaining complete records of measurements, conformance status, and any deviations identified during the inspection process.
- Initiate and document non-conformance reports for out-of-specification conditions, providing clear and factual descriptions of defects to support disposition and corrective action activities.
- Adhere to AS9100 quality procedures, internal work instructions, and customer-specific quality requirements at all stages of the inspection process.
Data Analysis and Continuous Improvement
- Collect, organize, and analyze inspection data using statistical process control tools to identify trends, monitor process capability, and support proactive quality management across production programs.
- Maintain and present inspection data using Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, producing clear and accurate reports for internal teams and customers as required.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action processes by providing detailed measurement data, process observations, and technical input to cross-functional problem-solving teams.
- Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives, contributing metrology expertise to efforts aimed at reducing inspection cycle time, improving measurement reliability, and enhancing overall quality system effectiveness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with engineering, CNC machining, additive manufacturing, and planning teams to resolve quality issues, provide inspection feedback, and ensure that dimensional requirements are understood and achievable throughout the manufacturing process.
- Communicate non-conformance findings and quality concerns clearly and promptly to relevant stakeholders, supporting timely disposition decisions and minimizing production impact.
- Engage with production and programming teams during part development and first article activities to ensure inspection strategies are aligned with manufacturing intent and customer requirements.
Training, Development and Standards
- Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to junior quality technicians in CMM operation, Zeiss Calypso programming, GD&T interpretation, and inspection best practices.
- Support the development and review of inspection procedures, work instructions, and quality documentation to ensure they reflect current best practices and remain aligned with AS9100 requirements.
- Reinforce a culture of precision, documentation discipline, and quality ownership within the metrology area, setting a consistent standard for the team through daily example.
Technical Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a custom machining or precision manufacturing environment, with significant hands-on involvement in CMM programming and quality inspection processes.
- Advanced proficiency in Zeiss Calypso CMM programming is a critical requirement; candidates must be able to independently develop, optimize, and maintain complex inspection routines from engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated experience operating Zeiss CMM systems and interpreting dimensional measurement results with a high level of technical accuracy.
- Expert-level proficiency in GD&T and metrology principles, with the ability to interpret and apply complex tolerance requirements from engineering drawings and model-based definitions.
- Experience with optical 3D scanning technologies such as Zeiss ATOS or Keyence systems is considered a strong asset.
- Proficiency in statistical process control tools and the ability to analyze and present inspection data clearly and accurately.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, production, and quality functions.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, documentation discipline, and the consistent application of quality standards in a production environment.
Industry & Material Knowledge
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-precision manufacturing industries is preferred.
- Familiarity with AS9100 or NADCAP standards and aerospace quality documentation practices.
- Experience inspecting components manufactured from high-performance materials such as titanium, Inconel, or aerospace-grade aluminum alloys is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes and the unique dimensional and surface characteristics of additively manufactured components is considered an asset.
Education and Professional Attributes
- A high school diploma is required; post-secondary education in quality, metrology, engineering technology, or a related field is considered an asset. Equivalent hands-on experience in a precision manufacturing environment will be highly valued.
- Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose measurement discrepancies, interpret complex data sets, and support effective quality decisions.
- Communicates clearly and professionally across all levels of the organization, translating technical inspection findings into practical guidance that supports engineering and production teams.
- A meticulous and detail-oriented professional who maintains the highest standards of measurement accuracy, documentation integrity, and process compliance in every aspect of their work.
- A natural mentor who shares technical knowledge openly, supports the growth of junior team members, and contributes positively to a quality-driven team culture.
- A reliable and accountable contributor who takes ownership of inspection strategy and execution, anticipates quality risks, and upholds a disciplined, well-organized metrology environment.
