KEY FUNCTION:
Provide scientific expertise to the North East Cancer Centre (NECC) through the application of physics to medicine. Develop and support major programs within the department of Medical Physics.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Chief Physicist & Manager, Medical Physics.
DUTIES:
1. Design, implement, and manage programs such as Quality Assurance, Education, Treatment Planning, Brachytherapy, and Radiation Protection.
2. Participate in specification and selection of radiation treatment and medical physics equipment.
3. Perform acceptance testing, commissioning, and calibration of equipment used for planning and delivery of radiation treatments.
4. Design and implement quality assurance programs related to equipment, dosimetry, and treatment planning.
5. Develop and maintain data bases for treatment planning.
6. Calibrate radiation measurement devices and equipment.
7. Ensure implementation, maintenance of, and adherence to the Radiation Safety program in accordance with federal and provincial government regulations including, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Healing Arts Radiation Protection (HARP) Act.
8. Provide technical direction, expertise, and advice to radiation oncologists, radiation dosimetrists (treatment planners), and radiation therapists on appropriate choices of treatment techniques and patient dosimetry.
9. Provide imaging expertise for radiation treatment planning and delivery verification.
10. Maintain proficiency in current medical physics techniques and standards.
11. Initiate and participate in the implementation of new techniques and technologies within the Radiation Program.
12. Provide support for computer systems and information technology networks used within the Radiation Program.
13. Teach medical physics residents, radiation oncology residents, radiation therapist students, new staff and visitors through didactic sessions, seminars and one-on-one interactions.
14. Supervise graduate, undergraduate, summer, and/or co-op students as required.
15. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
16. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
17. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
18. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
19. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
20. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a Master’s of Science Degree (MSc) in Physics from an accredited university.
2. Successful completion of Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) accredited medical physics residency program or Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) Bridging Program.
3. Eligibility for Membership in the CCPM or equivalent certification.
4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a Medical Physicist role (including Medical Physics Residency) in the last two (2) years.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated knowledge and clinical experience in radiation physics and radiation protection.
2. Demonstrated ability to teach/mentor students and support personnel.
3. Demonstrated high degree of interest, enthusiasm, and commitment to patient care.
4. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
5. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
6. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
7. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
8. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload
9. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
10. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
