Foreman — Civil Excavation | Kelowna and Surrounding Areas

Boston Earthworks LTD. is a growing civil excavation company specializing in civil utility and earthwork projects throughout the Okanagan and surrounding areas. With a strong foundation of expertise and a dedicated workforce, we take pride in exceeding client expectations on every project.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Foreman to lead our on-site operations and contribute to our continued success.

Position Overview

The Foreman is responsible for leading day-to-day field operations on civil excavation projects in Kelowna and surrounding areas. The role oversees a crew of 3–6 tradespeople — including pipe fitters, labourers, gradesmen, and equipment operators — and coordinates a broad scope of civil work, including:

· Installation of shallow utilities, storm and sanitary sewer systems, and watermains

· Curb and sidewalk installation

· Asphalt restoration

· Bulk excavation

· Detailed building excavation

All work is performed in accordance with MMCD standards and applicable municipal bylaws.

Roles and Responsibilities

· Safety leadership. Enforce site safety protocols and ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements, industry standards, and applicable regulations.

· Crew supervision. Lead and coordinate a crew of pipe fitters, labourers, gradesmen, and equipment operators; allocate tasks and manage daily productivity.

· Quality assurance. Oversee installation of utilities, sewer and water, curb and sidewalk, asphalt restoration, and excavation work to MMCD standards and applicable municipal bylaws.

· Scheduling. Coordinate daily and weekly work plans, optimizing crew and equipment deployment to keep projects on schedule.

· Equipment oversight. Direct safe and efficient use of Boston's equipment fleet, including coordination of routine maintenance and pre-trip inspections.

· Plan interpretation. Read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and grade information; communicate scope clearly to the crew.

· Stakeholder communication. Maintain clear, professional communication with clients, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and the office team.

· Problem solving. Address site challenges promptly and propose practical solutions to keep work moving.

Equipment You'll Direct

Boston operates a range of civil excavation equipment, including:

· Excavators (compact, mid-size, and large-class)

· Skid steers

· Compaction rollers

· Loaders, rock trucks, and specialized machines

Hands-on experience operating any of these equipment classes is considered an asset, but not required.

Requirements

· Minimum 5 years of experience as a Foreman in civil construction

· Demonstrated installation experience across shallow utilities, storm and sanitary sewer, watermains, curb and sidewalk, asphalt restoration, and bulk and detailed excavation

· Working knowledge of process flows for civil utility installation

· Strong ability to read and interpret project drawings and specifications

· Attention to detail with a focus on quality workmanship

· Positive attitude, leadership presence, and willingness to mentor crew members

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Efficient, punctual, and able to perform under pressure and against tight deadlines

· Valid driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract

· Willingness to travel to job sites in the surrounding region

Required Certifications

· BC Ground Disturbance Level 2

· Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1

Considered an Asset

· Confined Space Entry certification

· Knowledge of MMCD standards and municipal bylaws applicable to civil excavation

· Prior experience working in the Okanagan region

Working Conditions

This is an outdoor, physically active role performed on active construction sites in all seasons. The Foreman is expected to be on-site daily, on their feet for extended periods, and capable of working in varying weather conditions typical to the Okanagan region.

Compensation

· Hourly wage: $40.00 – $50.00, commensurate with experience

· 90-day probationary period

· Benefits enrolment following successful completion of probation
