Youth Activity Worker

Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society (LFVAS) is accepting applications for a Youth Activity Worker. LFVAS is an Indigenous-led non-profit organization, comprised of a dedicated group of individuals who promote, support, and advocate for services to meet the needs of Indigenous people in Langley. This position is being offered with funding from the United Way of British Columbia.

Reporting to the Early Years Coordinator, the Youth Activity Worker will co-facilitate Spá:th Club - after school drop-in and spring/summer camps for Indigenous youth aged 6-14, across various sites in the Langley School District. Modelling positive behaviour and communication with the team, the worker will plan, prepare and deliver culturally relevant activities and healthy snacks to Indigenous youth participants, whilst maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Position is temporary until end of December.

TERM: Start ASAP, ongoing

HOURS OF WORK: 18-20 hours per week during school year
additional hours available for spring and summer camps

WORK LOCATION: Langley area

COMPENSATION: $24.00 - $26.20/hour, commensurate with education and experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Grade 12, certificate in a related human/social service field or recreation course preferred
  • Interest in human services, social work, or community planning, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of vulnerable populations which may include such disciplines and fields of study as: social work, mental health, nursing, native studies, youth work, or education assistant
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children or youth
  • General understanding of Microsoft Office365 applications (e.g., Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook)
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED Level A (or willing to complete)
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate (or willing to complete)
  • Ability to perform tasks involving moderate physical activity in working with children or youth, including walking, standing, bending, and lifting objects
  • Must be well-versed in cultural sensitivity and have understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal culture, traditions and historical issues impacting urban Indigenous families
