CHILD AND YOUTH SUPPORT WORKER

Reports To: Divisional Principal of Inclusion and Learning
Union Status: Out of Scope
Location: Student Services
Hours: 6 hours/day (10 Months per school year)
Annual Salary Range: $32.24 - $37.41 (per hour depending on qualifications) plus vacation pay
Language Requirement: English

Purpose of Position
The Child and Youth Support Worker plays a crucial role in ensuring the social, emotional, and physical well-being of children and youth with high needs. Under the guidance of the school administrators, Student Services and the school team, the Child and Youth Support Worker will actively participate, implement, and assess student plans to meet the developmental needs of students. Supervised by the Divisional Principal of Inclusion and Learning who will ensure the role is in line with Pembina Trails School Division values and beliefs of inclusion, student success and support for student behaviour.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides guidance, mentorship, and direct intervention for students in alignment with their student specific plans.
- Collaborates with teachers, learning support staff, and clinicians to develop and maintain respectful, cooperative relationships that enhance the seamless delivery of the student-specific plan.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of the child or youth by monitoring and providing care in accordance with student plans.
- Tracks and reports daily progress as outlined by the support team and clinicians.
- Collaborates with the Divisional Principal of Inclusion and Learning to create conditions and opportunities for student success that may include in school or in community opportunities.
- Provides transportation for youth as required by the school support team and individual plans.
- May be required to work with a student off-site or in isolation.
- May be required to enter the caregiver’s home and transport the student to school.
- May be required to work hours outside of the traditional school hours.
- Provides alternate programming/decisions as directed by the school team.
- Communicates with guardians (verbally or otherwise) as prescribed by the team.
- Physically and emotionally manages interactions with students who may be dysregulated and/or presenting with challenging behaviours.
Skills and Qualifications
Skill and Knowledge – Required:
- Child and Youth Care Diploma or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
- Experience working with children and youth in social, emotional, and behavioural programs, particularly with students facing emotional and behavioral challenges.
- Demonstrated competency in positive student behaviour management.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating effectively within an educational team (teacher, learning support staff, clinicians).
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Effective crisis management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain discretion with respect to sensitive or confidential information.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
- Problem solving and crisis management abilities.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care.
- Cultural sensitivity, cultural responsive awareness and training.
- Physically able to respond to various situations that may arise.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Skill and Knowledge – Desired:
- Prior experience in an educational environment.
- Prior experience working in high needs setting.
- Nonviolent crisis intervention and or low arousal training.
- First Aid/CPR Training.
