Job Title: Behavioural Respite Support Worker
Reports To: Behavioural Inclusion Supervisor / Executive Director
Position Summary
The Behavioural Respite Support Worker is responsible for providing respite care to families with children who have complex needs. This is a hands-on role that supports parents by allowing them time to attend appointments, manage essential responsibilities, or engage in self-care activities that contribute to their own well-being and their child’s success.
Respite support may include providing direct, hands-on care to children, supporting family routines, and offering childcare within the family home to ensure children are safe, supported, and engaged.
This is a Temporary/Full-Time position, scheduled based on the individual needs of families. The successful candidate will deliver respite care using a holistic, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed approach. They must understand that some children may present with high or complex behaviours and demonstrate strong skills in risk prevention, crisis management, behaviour support, and child supervision, while promoting safety, stability, and positive developmental experiences.
Documentation is a critical component of this role. The Behavioural Respite Support Worker is responsible for completing accurate, timely, and detailed documentation following each shift. This includes recording observations, behaviours, interventions used, safety concerns, progress toward goals, and any incidents or notable changes. Documentation must be completed in accordance with Makoon Transition Inc. policies and confidentiality requirements and is essential to ensuring continuity of care, accountability, and effective team communication.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for children with complex needs, including but not limited to changing briefs, meal preparation and feeding, oral hygiene, bathing, and personal care.
- Offer parental support by assessing daily needs and assisting in ways that reduce stress and increase stability, such as light cleaning of the unit, organizing household spaces, supervising specific children, supporting outings, or allowing parents time to attend appointments or engage in self-care.
- Follow and implement Behavioural Intervention Plans (BIPs) for children who have them, consistently working toward identified goals and documenting progress.
- Transport children to appointments, programs, or approved outings in accordance with Makoon Transition Inc. policies and safety requirements.
- Respond effectively to crisis situations and complex behaviours, utilizing de-escalation techniques, safety planning, and approved intervention strategies.
- Remain proactive, attentive, and fully engaged in all aspects of care, ensuring children’s safety, dignity, and well-being at all times.
- Complete accurate, timely, and detailed documentation related to care provided, behaviours observed, interventions used, incidents, and progress toward goals.
- Carry out other related duties as required to support families and program operations.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Submit incident reports as required.
- Provide detailed documentation of interactions with children and families.
- Record care and support actions provided during each shift.
- Document goals and action plans utilized during each shift.
- Note parent engagement levels and relevant observations.
Behavioural Care and Parental Support
- Provide consistent engagement and holistic care to children with complex needs.
- Demonstrate understanding of family dynamics, history, and triggers to safely and meaningfully engage with all members of the family.
- Support children through escalated or high-risk behaviours using approved strategies.
- Support parents based on their needs on a given day, offering healthy and constructive suggestions when appropriate.
- Collaborate with Makoon staff when situations arise that require additional support.
- Build and maintain healthy, respectful, and supportive relationships with families in a trauma-informed manner.
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in one of the following (or equivalent):
- Developmental / Behavioural Support Work
- Early Childhood Education
- Personal Support Work
- Educational Assistance
- Child Psychology
- Lived experience providing respite care to individuals with complex needs will be considered.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience supporting children or youth with complex needs.
- Experience providing direct support to Indigenous families and communities is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Current CPR & First Aid certification.
- Mental Health First Aid.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or equivalent de-escalation training.
- Ability to uphold and work in alignment with Makoon Transition Inc.’s mission and vision.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Agreement to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with workplace safety requirements.
