Full job description
Job Summary:
The incumbent investigates and assesses child protection referrals, responds to inquiries and non-child protection referrals, and provides counselling using crisis intervention and problem-solving skills. They deliver a range of agency support services and provide ongoing child protection services—both voluntary and involuntary—to children, youth, and families when a child or youth requires protection or is at risk of maltreatment.
The role includes conducting interviews to assess individual and family functioning, strengths, needs, risks to children, and available supports. The incumbent develops assessments and service plans with families, kin, and community services, and is responsible for case recordings, social histories, correspondence, and legal documentation.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Social Work is preferred; however, applicants with a degree in Social Sciences and at least two years of related paid professional experience working with children and families may also be considered.
- Authorized Ontario Child Protection Worker designation.
- Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services protection standards.
- Strong knowledge of anti-racism and anti-oppression principles, and the ability to apply them in daily practice through lived and/or professional experience.
- Knowledge of anti-Black racism, oppressive practices, and their impact on equity-deserving communities in our region, as well as child protection legislation (CYFSA), tools such as the Eligibility Spectrum, standards, and the Signs of Safety practice framework.
- Bilingualism in English and French is an asset. Proficiency will be tested.
- Experience delivering First Nation Child and Family Services is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated excellence in family and individual assessment and engagement.
- Excellent counselling and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- A valid G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Family counselling experience.
- Excellent organizational and writing skills.
