Employment Specialist- Career & Employment Counselling
Temporary Full-Time – Maternity Leave Coverage
$23.88–$29.37/hour | Full-Time | St. Thomas, Ontario
Help people move from where they are today toward meaningful, sustainable employment.
Employment Services Elgin is looking for an engaging, resourceful and motivated Employment Specialist to join our team.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working one-on-one with people, helping them identify their strengths, overcome employment barriers and build a realistic pathway toward employment.
As an Employment Specialist, you will manage a caseload of clients with a wide range of employment needs. Some may be ready to move quickly into job search, while others may need more intensive support to build confidence, strengthen employability skills, address barriers and prepare for the labour market.
What You'll Do
Employment Counselling & Case Management
- Meet individually with clients to understand their employment history, skills, strengths, interests, goals and barriers.
- Assess employment readiness and determine the level and type of support each client needs.
- Work collaboratively with clients to develop individualized Employment Action Plans with practical, achievable goals.
- Maintain an active caseload and provide ongoing coaching, follow-up and accountability.
- Recognize when an approach isn't working and adjust the service plan to help clients continue progressing.
Career & Job Search Support
- Help clients identify realistic career and employment opportunities that align with their skills, interests and local labour market conditions.
- Provide individualized support with resumes, cover letters, applications, interviews and job-search strategies.
- Coach clients on workplace expectations, communication, reliability, confidence and other employability skills.
- Help clients understand and navigate today's labour market, including online job-search tools and recruitment practices.
- Prepare clients to transition into active job search and employer-focused services when they are ready.
Barrier Resolution & Community Connections
- Help clients identify barriers that may be affecting their ability to prepare for, obtain or maintain employment.
- Connect clients with appropriate community resources, training, certifications and employment-related supports.
- Work collaboratively with community partners and other service providers when additional supports would help a client move forward.
- Support clients with practical problem-solving related to transportation, training, workplace needs and other employment barriers.
Documentation & Program Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate, timely and professional client records, case notes and Employment Action Plans.
- Document client progress, interventions, outcomes and next steps.
- Use CaMS and other electronic systems to manage client information and service activity.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow program, privacy and documentation requirements.
- Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other digital tools effectively.
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Career Development, Social Services, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Community Services, Employment Counselling, or another related field.
- Experience in employment services, career counselling, case management, vocational rehabilitation, social services, workforce development or another related client-support role is an asset.
- Career Development Practitioner certification or related training is an asset.
- Knowledge of the local labour market, community resources and employment barriers is an asset.
- Strong digital literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Successful Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
