Full job description

Mentor College & TEAM School is a leading independent school in the GTA celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2026-2027. We are looking for a dynamic and energetic Outdoor Education Teacher to provide programming for our Grade 5 through 8 students at our facility near Gravenhurst.

Essential Functions

The teacher will:

  • Function with a professional level of involvement and conduct at all times.
  • Ensure that the safety and security of each individual is the highest priority.
  • Provide an equal-opportunity atmosphere for all students to share, contribute, and grow at their own pace.
  • Motivate students to explore, investigate, and examine the natural world.
  • Inspire personal growth and development in students through the outdoor classroom environment.
  • Demonstrate a positive and friendly attitude.
  • Develop and implement curriculum-based programming at the OEC.
  • Work co-operatively with the other outdoor education teacher, the facility manager, and the homeroom teachers in the implementation of the programme.

Duties of Job

The teacher will:

  • Hold student information assemblies with each grade level at each school prior to their visit to the OEC
  • Prepare and deliver completed information packages for each student shortly after the information session
  • Establish the deadline for the return of the forms (in conjunction with the Facility Manager) by the homeroom teacher and ensure the deadline is met
  • Ensure that school rules and regulations are upheld while at the OEC.
  • Correlate experiential OEC programs and activities with the appropriate classroom curriculum and maintain contact with the associated administration with regards to the curriculum.
  • Challenge each student to use their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities.
  • Provide opportunities for individual and group development of leadership skills, communication skills, trust and understanding, and how they are inter-related.
  • Present opportunities that stimulate students to learn about and examine the delicate relationship between humans and the natural world.
  • Provide first aid assistance within their certified skill level and seek higher medical assistance when needed. Parent contact for first aid issues should be made by the homeroom teacher with the first aider available to discuss the injury with the parent if necessary.
  • Handle minor behavioural issues with students as they arise and refer students to the homeroom teacher if deemed necessary
  • Promote good staff communication by participating in daily/weekly meetings with teaching staff, the facility manager and (if needed) maintenance staff.
  • Provide correspondence with classroom teachers, parents, and administration as necessary.
  • Remain at the Centre while it is in operation (eg: overnight)
  • Be provided with a locking bedroom for her/his exclusive use from Labour Day until Victoria Day

Hours/Days of Work 

While the Centre is in operation (eg: students are present), the teacher will:

  • be “on call” 24 hours per day (eg: overnight hours)
  • have a minimum of 1 hour of personal time each day or evening
  • be at the Centre a minimum of 1 hour prior to and following a student group

While the Centre is not in operation (eg: no students are present), the teacher will:

  • be informed by the supervisor as to the location of work (either the Centre or one of the other three campuses of Mentor College and TEAM School).
  • work days at the Centre that could include (but not be limited to) programme preparation or taking inventory.
  • work days at one of the Mississauga campuses that could include (but not be limited to) supply teaching, short-term occasional teaching, giving student information sessions, and student supervision.
  • have days where they are not required to report for work at all. These days will be decided by the teacher’s supervisor and could include (but not be limited to) the 5 day of a work week when student groups will be attending the Centre for 4 of the 5 days.

Training, Certification and Experience

The teacher will:

  • Have a university degree, preferably in outdoor education, environmental science and/or education
  • Be experienced in the development, facilitation, and evaluation of various outdoor educational programmes.
  • Hold valid Standard Level First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications prior to the first week of programming.
  • Have received Challenge Course Instruction (Level 1 or higher) meeting the level of standards set forth by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) prior to the first week of programming.

Pay: $57,500.00 per year
