Full job description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Hematology (Ottawa Blood Disease Centre) at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are recruiting a hematologist specializing in lymphoproliferative disease to join our growing team as a full-time academic faculty member.
The Division of Hematology (The Ottawa Blood Disease Centre) is a large group of 43 faculty that work within a group practice plan model within the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital academic centre. The Division has three well-defined and successful clinical and research programs: Malignant Hematology, Benign Hematology and Thrombosis.
Academically, the division and department support undergraduate and postgraduate training, including subspecialty fellowship trainees in all three of our programs. Members have access to research services through the Office of Research Support and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute houses experts in broad areas of clinical epidemiology, statistical support, transfusion medicine research, patient decision-making, and knowledge translation. The Department of Medicine supports clinical academic work through a competitive academic incentive program
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.
Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive department supporting a large and diverse academic community. Our members are leaders in advancing clinical care, research excellence, and academic excellence.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.
The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.
We are currently seeking applicants with a clinical focus in lymphoproliferative disorders to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong clinical focus and will be supported and mentored to pursue an academic focus that fits their interests. As part of practicing in an academic setting, the incumbent will participate in training and supervision of trainees as well as the divisional on-call rotation.
While a specific area of interest within lymphoproliferative disorders is welcome, the successful candidate will see a mix of lymphoma patients in their out-patient clinics. The candidate will be involved in clinical teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will participate in divisional research through enrolling patients on actively recruiting clinical trials. The candidate’s academic focus could be clinical expertise and program development, clinical research, education or quality improvement, with an academic promotion path aligned with the candidate’s interests and expertise.
The lymphoproliferative group currently consists of 6 faculty who see >600 new lymphoma and CLL patients per year, offers a clinical lymphoma fellowship program, and conducts a mix of clinical research activities. The Lymphoproliferative Disease Group partners with the Transplant and Cellular Therapy program to provide hematopoietic cell transplants and immune effector cell therapies, with both commercial and research product activity. All faculty in the Malignant Hematology Program are co-located at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Hematology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.
The candidate will have expertise in lymphoproliferative disorders. Note that the position is within Ontario’s Alternate Funding Plan for malignant hematologists (POAFP) and remuneration is competitive nationally.
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
The Department of Medicine is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and encourages applications from individuals from equity-deserving groups. Accommodations are available upon request throughout the recruitment process.
Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
Please forward a 1-2 page letter of intent, 3 references (who will not be contacted without permission) and a CV to Dr Marc Carrier, Head Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine of The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa at mcarrier@toh.ca .
