Job Summary

Bringing Calgary Public Library’s strategic plan to life, the Casual Labourer provides a range of light-duty cleaning services that help to positively shape employee and user experiences. This position is responsible for providing clean and sanitized Library spaces. The Casual Labourer helps to provide an overall positive Library member experience assisting members indirectly by connecting them with others who can assist them.

Reflecting Calgary Public Library’s commitment to continuous improvement in the name of meeting the community’s ever evolving needs and expectations, the Casual Labourer contributes positively to change by working collaboratively and constructively in a dynamic team environment in which learning happens every day.

Responsibilities and Activities

The Casual Labourer contributes to the success of the Library and its impact in the community by participating in a wide range of responsibilities and activities.

  • Engage with Users
    • representing the Library in a positive and professional manner
    • engaging with members by being welcoming, friendly, and helpful, assisting members indirectly or referring them to others, as appropriate
    • maintaining good working relations with Library staff, contractors, and their staff
  • Shape a Positive User Experience
  • cleaning designated areas including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, restroom cleaning, and spot cleaning glass and windows, etc.
  • collecting and removing garbage and recyclable materials and safely disposing of hazardous waste

3. Create a Welcoming Environment
  • reporting defective or damaged washroom and department equipment
  • reporting when cleaning supplies need to be reordered

4. Apply Operational Standards
  • applying best practices and following all applicable policies, procedures, and legislation
  • adhering to all required health and safety precautions and guidelines
  • reporting safety, and security concerns
  • participating in emergency response procedures and workplace inspections

Qualifications

Qualifications
  • Completion of
    • a minimum of grade 8
  • Pre-Employment Screening Requirements:
    • Physical demands test
    • Successfully complete specified technology use tests

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Good understanding of basic cleaning techniques and processes
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow Health and Safety Guidelines
  • Ability to work independently and in a team with people from all backgrounds, abilities, and age groups
  • Basic technology skills (as defined by Human Resources)
