The Opportunity:

beyond 3:30 is a unique initiative that provides after school programming focused on healthy living and learning opportunities in the arts for middle school children, Monday-Friday in one of the places they trust the most, their local school. It supports priority communities through innovative partnering between a wide variety of local community organizations and corporations. beyond 3:30 is operating in 25 select middle-school locations across the city.

Hours are from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm Monday to Friday.

At each site, the Nutrition Staff is accountable to their Site Coordinator and responsible for the following:

Responsibilities:

· Prepare healthy meals for participants, following the curriculum provided, respecting budget, Canada’s food guidelines and the cultural representation of the school population.

· Plan and implement the Junior Chefs’ Club daily, plus bi-monthly community dinners

· Prepare and submit weekly menu to Site Coordinator for program scheduling

· Engage participants in the preparation of a healthy meal every day. Teach them about the importance of nutrition, a balanced diet, how to read labels and other goals as noted in the curriculum

· Prepare and distribute recipe sheets each day, for participants to take home

· Demonstrate and ensure use of safe food handling practices

· Implement a safe, fun, and educational program that is accessible to all beyond 3:30 participants

Education, Requirements and Qualifications:

· Diploma in Culinary Arts, Nutrition, or equivalent demonstrated kitchen experience

· Food Safety Training Certification (or willingness to obtain certification)

· Excellent communication, leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills.

· Outstanding problem solving and negotiation skills.

· Exceptional skills in program facilitation, group dynamics, and effective guidance and discipline techniques with middle-school age children

· Positive and culturally competent attitude toward working with youth in priority neighborhoods

· Ability to work effectively within a team environment

· Understanding of school board operations and procedures is an asset.

· Must have Safe Food Handler’s, First Aid and HIGH FIVE training or are willing to obtain them shortly after being hired.
