Full job description

Part-Time Academic Intervention Teacher (OCT Required)
Halton Locations: Milton & Burlington

This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly structured, evidence-based instructional environment focused on meaningful, measurable student growth. Teachers receive specialized training in Direct Instruction (DI) programs and become part of a collaborative team committed to high-quality intervention and student success.

Appletree Learning Centre is seeking a committed, Ontario Certified Teacher who is confident working independently to support our growing Halton locations.

It is best suited for educators who are looking for a consistent, long-term role and are confident working independently with a high level of accountability.

About Appletree Learning Centre

Appletree Learning Centre is a growing organization with locations in Etobicoke, Milton, and Burlington. We specialize in one-on-one academic remediation for students with learning differences or gaps in foundational skills.

Our instruction is rooted in Direct Instruction (DI) and other evidence-based programs, including JUMP Math. Sessions are highly structured, fast-paced, and focused on building measurable progress in literacy, math, and written expression.

About the Role

This position is based in our Milton and Burlington locations.

This role requires strong instructional presence, professionalism, and the ability to maintain pacing and structure throughout sessions.

The ideal candidate is confident working independently and takes full ownership of their role, preparation, and performance.

Working Independently

This role requires a high degree of independence and professional judgment.

Teachers are often the only Appletree staff member on site during their shift and are expected to:

  • Work confidently without direct supervision
  • Follow established procedures and instructional protocols
  • Problem-solve independently when appropriate
  • Communicate proactively with the leadership team when support is required
  • Take ownership of student programming, preparation, and session delivery

This position is best suited for educators who are comfortable operating with a high level of autonomy and accountability.

What We Offer

  • Part-time employment
  • Starting at $27/hour. Additional paid training and professional development are provided.
  • Comprehensive paid training in Direct Instruction programs
  • Ongoing coaching and professional development
  • A structured, supportive, and collaborative work environment
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful, measurable impact in students’ academic growth
  • Flexible summer scheduling

Who This Role Is For

This role is best suited for teachers who:

  • Are highly reliable and consistent, and can commit to a set schedule for the full school year
  • Are self-starters who problem-solve and reference training materials before seeking support
  • Thrive in a structured, fast-paced teaching environment
  • Are motivated by seeing real, measurable student progress

This role is not a fit for candidates seeking occasional or short-term work, or those whose availability may change due to other teaching opportunities.

Commitment Expectations

We invest significant time and resources into training and are seeking candidates who value consistency and long-term commitment.

Candidates must be able to commit to a consistent schedule from September through August. While summer scheduling is more flexible, continued availability through the summer months is required.

This role is best suited for educators seeking a stable, long-term position and whose availability is unlikely to change due to other teaching opportunities during the school year.

Please apply only if you can meet these expectations.

Teaching Environment

  • One-on-one instruction
  • Structured, scripted Direct Instruction programs
  • Fast-paced lessons with clear expectations and outcomes
  • Set session times requiring strong time management and organization

Training & Onboarding

Training takes place in July and August and is a required component of this role.

The process begins with self-directed completion of our video training modules, which candidates are expected to work through independently and thoroughly. These modules provide the foundational knowledge required to move into in-person training.

Upon completion, candidates will participate in a structured combination of in-person observations and team teaching sessions to apply and refine their skills.

All in-person training takes place at our Etobicoke location (3090 Bloor Street W) between the hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

While training is not scheduled daily, candidates must be flexible and available during this period to complete approximately 8 observation sessions and 10 team teaching sessions.

All training components must be completed by mid-August. Candidates who are unable to commit to this training schedule should not apply.

Schedule & Location

Locations:

  • Milton: 400 Bronte St S
  • Burlington: 980 Fraser Drive

Teaching Hours:

  • Weekday evenings (4:00 pm or 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
  • Saturdays (8:30 am – 12:30 pm)

Minimum Requirement: 3 teaching days per week (2 evenings and Saturday mornings)

Preference will be given to candidates with flexibility to support both Milton and Burlington locations when needed.

Requirements

  • Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
  • Exceptional command of spoken English, including the ability to clearly model sounds, blending, and language structures for early literacy instruction
  • Strong instructional ability in literacy and math (up to Grade 8)
  • Ability to deliver structured, evidence-based instructional programs with consistency and attention to detail
  • Strong reliability, organization, and professionalism
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Assets

  • Special Education qualifications or experience
  • Experience with Direct Instruction or structured literacy programs
  • Experience teaching math up to Grade 8
