Arctic Research Foundation
Captain (Master 500 GT) – (Seasonal - August – October)
Location: Canadian Arctic
The People People, on behalf of our client, the Arctic Research Foundation (ARF), are seeking an experienced Captain (Master 500 GT).
The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is a non-profit organization that is spearheading the development of innovative scientific infrastructure in the Canadian Arctic. Our research vessels and self-powered mobile laboratories are enabling efficient and cutting-edge research in the region. At ARF, we facilitate and drive scientific, cultural, and economic research in the Arctic. We collaborate with governments, universities, and other research institutions that require access to advanced infrastructure for their program initiatives. Furthermore, we work closely with Arctic Indigenous peoples to ensure that our projects are informed by and respectful of the diverse cultures and perspectives in the North.
ARF operates a fleet of small research vessels in the Canadian Arctic, which are active during the ice-free summer months from July through November. Our Captains and Crew are required to work in remote locations away from home for extended periods of time, typically ranging from 1 to 4 months. This position is not suitable for someone seeking a regular month-on-month-off schedule.
At the Arctic Research Foundation, we offer a safe and inclusive work environment, with highly competitive wages.
Responsibilities:
· Act as Captain/Master in a manner that ensures the safety and security of persons, equipment, and the protection of the environment.
· Steer and operate vessels using equipment such as radar, depth finders, radios, buoys, lights, and lighthouses.
· Dock and undock vessels, sometimes navigating through tight spaces and uncharted waters.
· Alter navigation plans based on weather conditions to keep vessels, passengers, and cargo safe.
· Inspect boats and ships to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and their conformity to regulations.
· Read gauges to ensure the safe operation of machineries and equipment onboard.
· Compute positions, set courses, and determine speeds using charts, compasses, area plotting sheets, and knowledge of local conditions.
· Signal crew members and deckhands to perform necessary tasks, including rig tow lines, open or close ramps and gates, and pull guard chains across entries.
· Ensure the safety of all persons engaged in equipment operation and the loading and unloading of the vessel.
· Maintain all onboard equipment, and keep detailed records of daily activities, personnel reports, ship positions and movements, ports of call, weather conditions, passenger and cargo status, and pollution control efforts.
· Maintain operational and maintenance logs and all other required Transport Canada and/or Canada Shipping Act, 2001 documentation.
· Routinely conduct boat drills, fire drills, and safety inspections.
· Ensure that all crew members possess the necessary qualification certificates imposed under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001.
· Ensure that the vessel is properly crewed according to the vessel Safe Manning Certificate.
· Monitor crew training.
· Implement Employer Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and safety protocols (Health and Safety) as applicable.
· Notify the Employer and/or appropriate authorities if any of the above duties and responsibilities are unable or unfeasible to be performed and of any safety or environmental accidents, hazards, or dangerous occurrences which are known or anticipated.
· Report to the Employer any change in the Employee’s circumstances that could affect their ability to carry out their duties, outlined herein but not limited to the above.
Minimum Requirements:
· Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic with Limited Contiguous Waters Endorsement or greater.
· MED with respect to STCW basic safety.
· MED training with respect to STCW proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats.
· MED in advanced firefighting
· Marine Advance First Aid
· Current Marine Medical Certificate
· ROC-MC (Restricted Operator’s Certificate - Maritime Commercial)
Desired Skills:
· Strong work ethic & the ability to take initiative.
· Very organized & reliable

· Commercial Fishing experience is an asset.
· Experience onboard a Research Vessel is an asset.
We encourage all qualified candidates who meet the key requirements of this role and share a passion for research and the Canadian Arctic to apply.
