What you will do

As an Associate Vice-President, you will be :

Responsible for all aspects of the development, delivery, oversight, and continuous improvement of the various programs administered by the Secretariat that currently fall within its portfolio, including the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program, the Canada 150 Research Chairs Program, the Research Support Fund, and the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. In support of the Vice-President, Research (SSHRC), the incumbent also oversees the New Frontiers in Research Fund, the Canada Biomedical Research Fund, the Canada Impact+ Chairs Program, and the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program.

The federal government's investment in the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS) exceeds $1.2 billion annually, with an operating budget of $2.5 million per year to support a team of employees whose expertise spans the mandates of Canada’s three federal granting agencies.

The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of complex multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and multi-stakeholder research initiatives at the national and international levels, as assigned by the federal government. The incumbent coordinates program administration across the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), as well as Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) and Health Canada.

The position reports to the Vice-President, Research (SSHRC), and is accountable to the interagency governance structure, including the TIPS Management and Steering Committees, the NFRF Management and Steering Committees, and the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC).


What you need to succeed

Education

  • An advanced degree in the social sciences humanities or natural sciences or engineering or health sciences or equivalent, and demonstrated research credentials and/or credentials in the field of research management.
  • A Ph.D. would be an asset.
  • Foreign Credential Validation against Canadian Standards

Experience

  • Experience related to the support of research, research training and post-secondary activities, including interactions at senior levels with post-secondary institutions and government.
  • Experience in communicating research findings and concepts to a wide range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience in planning and implementing public outreach and engagement across diverse communities and in developing and maintaining successful relationships with senior representatives in academia and post-secondary, research institutions, government and non-government sectors.
  • Experience in developing strategies to leverage relationships with the goal to influence key decisions makers.
  • Experience developing and managing broad-based initiatives in support of strategic organizational priorities.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of foresight research trends, practices and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian research and policy environment.
  • Knowledge of the three funding agencies’ mandates, strategic priorities, programs and positions within the domestic and international research community, as well as in the federal government framework.
  • Knowledge of the needs and concerns of key stakeholder groups served by the tri-councils.
  • Knowledge of fields, disciplines, issues and trends in the social sciences and humanities disciplines within Canada, and internationally.
