Full job description

Job Purpose:

This position is to provide high-quality patient service and laboratory support in a fertility laboratory by performing specimen collection and processing, routine laboratory testing, accurate documentation, and other laboratory activities in accordance with quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the reception point for patients.
  • Perform phlebotomy using appropriate aseptic techniques for laboratory analysis.
  • Enter and document patient, specimen, and test results in appropriate worksheets and logbooks.
  • Label, centrifuge, and aliquot specimens, including those requiring special handling.
  • Prepare and package specimens for send-out testing in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Perform and document QA activities, including calibration and QC procedures.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, including pipettes, biosafety cabinets, and centrifuges.
  • Monitor and manage laboratory inventory, assist with supply procurement, and support laboratory documentation, audits, and accreditation activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory work area.
  • Monitor and record refrigerator, freezer, and laboratory temperatures and humidity levels.
  • Follow applicable safety procedures, healthcare regulations, and preventive measures.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain the confidentiality and security of personal health information in accordance with PHIPA and applicable organizational policies.
  • Perform duties in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations, and guidelines related to assisted reproductive technology (ART), including Health Canada requirements, Public Health Ontario guidance, and Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) standards.
  • Perform in-house immunoassays using ECLIA and ELISA technologies as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant program or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology, Biomedical/Health Sciences, or a related field is preferred.
  • MLPAO certification is required.
  • CSMLS or CMLTO certification is an asset.
  • Minimum two years of phlebotomy experience.
  • Previous clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

  • Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize work, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team while maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and patients.
  • High level of discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while maintaining professionalism in difficult situations.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a multi-skilled and culturally diverse environment requiring prolonged periods of sitting, standing, bending, and walking, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse and challenging clients.
  • Flexibility to provide coverage for sick leave and work occasional late hours as required.
  • Ability to perform assigned specialized tasks and other duties as required.

Working Conditions:

Monday to Friday, with weekends and statutory holidays as scheduled.

Reports to:

Biochemistry Laboratory Manager.

Pay: $21.00-$24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
