Avanda Biolabs conducts preclinical research to develop immune-based therapies for oncology and infectious disease. We work with collaborators world-wide to conduct complex immune assays to support product candidates being prepared for clinical trials. Avanda Biolabs operates in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is committed to innovation and cutting-edge research.

The candidate will have a BSc or an MSc degree with expertise in immunology and/or microbiology and hands-on experience in related laboratory techniques. This role involves working closely with the project leader senior scientist and cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality research outcomes. Familiarity with using a biological safety cabinet, eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell culture techniques, and in vitro assay execution is expected. Experience handling clinical trial samples is a plus.

The successful applicant will execute immunology and microbiology assays and techniques, such as eukaryotic cell and bacterial cultures, ELISA, ELISPOT, opsonophagocytic killing assay, and flow cytometry based binding assay. Other responsibilities include developing and drafting standard operating procedures, data entry, inventory, and lab maintenance. There will also be an opportunity to learn new techniques in bacteriology and cellular immunology. We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated skills in time management, ability to work independently by setting goals as well as collaborate with other scientists, with commitment to quality and with strong written and verbal communications.

The position is full time (35hrs per week) and is available immediately upon completion of security background checks. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform the implementation and analysis of in vitro and in vivo scientific studies in microbiology and immunology.
  • Conduct experiments and collect data under the guidance of the project leader senior scientist.
  • Multi-task and efficiently execute multiple experiments, ensuring timely completion and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of research activities and findings.
  • Prepare and present research findings in reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of patents and publications.
  • Follow safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and ethical considerations in research, including compliance with regulations relating to clinical trial sample handling.

Required Qualifications:

  • BSc or MSc degree in Immunology, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in scientific research, including eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell culture.
  • Knowledge of experimental assays specific to respiratory diseases, bacteriology, and T cell immunology.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively convey experimental designs and results.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and regulatory requirements in research, including regulations governing clinical trial sample handling.
  • Experience handling clinical trial samples is an asset.
  • Familiarity and expertise in flow cytometry techniques, including both operation and analysis, is an asset.
