Job Summary
The Research Assistant Technician is responsible for assisting and coordinating multiple on-going research clinical trial activities for various pediatric otolaryngology faculty members. This includes study set-up, patient recruitment, data management, and collaboration with hospital staff and researchers within BC Children's/UBC or external vendors. The incumbent is responsible for the timely management of research projects, including adherence to study timelines and deadlines for grant applications and conference submissions.
Organizational Status
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).
The incumbent reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Amjad Tobia. The Research Assistant interacts closely with the rest of the pediatric otolaryngology team, as well as patients, healthcare professionals, trainees, and staff in the UBC Department of Surgery and UBC Faculty of Medicine.
Work Performed
- Supports clinical research activities for various studies.
- Creates and monitors ethics applications for research projects.
- Recruits and obtains consent of patients who are eligible to participate in the study.
- Designs, creates and maintains research database for clinical trials.
- Tracks the status of research trials into database.
- Assists with drafting, revising, and submitting research grants.
- Assists in research proposal and protocol development and collaborates on grant applications to facilitate project funding and liaise with funding sources.
- Assists with the drafting and review of budgets and detailed scopes for studies.
- Assists in preparing and editing manuscripts and presentations.
- Trains volunteers and medical students on applicable study procedures and supports medical trainees in conducting research.
- Ensures adherence to appropriate procedures and practices for patient consent and ethical review in studies by following good clinical practice (GCP); including standard operating procedures (SOP) development, REB applications and meeting Health Canada regulatory and industry sponsor requirements.
- Coordinates research patient visits to the clinic, including tracking visit and test times, and sending reminders to patients.
- Performs other duties within the scope of this position.
Working Conditions
The incumbent works in a standard office environment at BC Children’s Hospital, in the ambulatory care building.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
All work is directly reviewed by Dr. Amjad Tobia. The Research Assistant Technician is required to conduct the research activities in an ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality with regards to information, particularly about study participants. Along with other colleagues, the incumbent is accountable for conduct concerning participant-related activities to the Principal Investigator.
The incumbent works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion. New or unusual problems are referred to the Principal Investigator.

- High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Computer literacy and experience required (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, REDCAP).
- Knowledge of clinical research methods, REB applications, RED CAP platform, GCP, and regulatory processes.
- Understanding of Indigenous Cultural Safety principles within the context of healthcare
- Experience with databases including design, creation and maintenance.
- Interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment and independently.
- Ability to contribute to a respectful, cooperative and supportive work environment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Solid judgment and a proven ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and discretion in interactions and in handling information.
- It is preferred if the candidate has a university degree in a relevant discipline.
- Basic programming skills in MATLAB, Python or related language is valued.
