Job Summary:


Job Description:

Description of Position: The Science Department is looking for two instructors to teach Scientific Literacy (SCIE 1114) in the Fall semester of 2026. This course explores what science is and how it is done. It helps students to develop critical thinking skills by showing them how to assess the validity and reliability of scientific studies, to analyze and construct scientific arguments, and to defend their arguments with reasoned evidence. The course demonstrates how science both influences, and is influenced by, culture and society and teaches students what it means to conduct themselves with professionalism in the scientific community.


Duties and Responsibilities:
SCIE 1114 is delivered in a seminar format that relies on in-class discussion and peer-based learning. Therefore, the successful candidate should be able to encourage and facilitate debate on a broad range of topics relating to science. Student deliverables include two long-form essays in English, along with two group assignments which the successful candidate will be required to grade in an objective and timely fashion. The course is delivered as three lecture and three tutorial hours weekly. In addition to these commitments, the successful candidate will also be required to hold two office hours weekly.


Required Qualifications:


  • A minimum MSc. in one of the science fields (astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, computer science, statistics, data science or math); PhD preferred in one of the science fields mentioned above
  • Experience teaching at a post-secondary institution required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including the capacity to grade student essays.
  • Experience facilitating small group discussion.
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in one or more of the history, philosophy, methods, and ethics of science.
