Full job description

Overview:
At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is one of the country’s largest tax incentive programs, designed to support research and development activities and foster technological innovation. With a history spanning more than 50 years, the program continues to play a critical role in strengthening Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

KPMG’s Tax Incentives Practice (TIP) is a multidisciplinary team of engineers and accountants that helps clients access tax savings through incentive programs such as SR&ED. The practice works with organizations across a wide range of industries and technologies.

KPMG is seeking a technology‑minded professional to join its SR&ED Tax Incentives group. This opportunity is well suited to an engineering or computer science professional with experience in software development who is interested in transitioning into a consultative, client‑facing role.

In this role, you will engage with CTOs, chief architects, and software developers to assess client projects for SR&ED eligibility. You will identify qualifying software and engineering activities, rapidly understand new technical concepts, and translate complex development work into clear, defensible technical narratives. You will also support Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reviews, including participating in meetings to explain and defend submitted claims when required.
What you will do:
  • Conduct in depth interviews with client stakeholders to gather technical information and develop clear, persuasive SR&ED project justifications
  • Analyze client technologies, products, and development processes to identify qualifying R&D activities
  • Translate complex software architectures, frameworks, integrations, and algorithms into concise technical summaries
  • Manage multiple client engagements, including planning, prioritization, and delivery within agreed timelines and budgets
  • Build and maintain effective client relationships across technical and senior management audiences
  • Support CRA reviews by preparing documentation and participating in meetings to explain and defend SR&ED claims
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and trends in software development, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics
  • Maintain an understanding of the SR&ED program and monitor legislative or administrative changes
What you bring to this role:
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience in software development or other IT focused R&D roles, or prior SR&ED consulting experience, is an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
  • Solid knowledge of software development and IT technologies, including relevant terminology and development practices
  • Demonstrated ability to ask effective questions, identify root causes, and understand complex R&D challenges
  • Experience working directly with clients and managing expectations across varying technical backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work across multiple engagements
  • Knowledge of CRA SR&ED tax rules is an asset
