Full job description
About the Role
We are looking for smart, curious physics graduates who learn quickly and want to work on difficult real-world technical problems.
We develop advanced scientific instruments combining robotics, electronics, sensors, fluidics, software, automation, chemistry and molecular biology.
You do not need previous experience in biotechnology, robotics or scientific instrumentation.
We are looking for people with strong quantitative reasoning who can be given an unfamiliar technical problem and figure it out through experimentation, data and first-principles thinking.
You will join our Systems Testing & Validation team and work directly with scientists, software developers, mechanical and electronics teams, and production.
Your job will be to answer questions like:
- Does this system actually work?
- Does it work every time?
- What happens after 10,000 cycles?
- Why did this machine fail when nine others didn't?
- Can you reproduce an intermittent software or hardware failure?
- How much manufacturing variation can the system tolerate?
- Can we automate a test so it can be performed consistently and repeatedly?
What You'll Do
You will work hands-on with real scientific instruments and prototypes. Depending on the problem, you may:
- Test complete scientific instruments and individual subsystems
- Design experiments to validate product performance
- Investigate hardware and software failures
- Test pumps, motors, heaters, sensors, electronics and robotic mechanisms
- Perform repeatability, reliability and stress testing
- Analyze experimental data and identify patterns and anomalies
- Write Python scripts to automate experiments and analyze results
- Develop automated software and hardware tests
- Build simple test fixtures and data-acquisition setups
- Compare performance across multiple machines and production lots
- Validate newly manufactured components and finished products
- Develop automated production QC procedures
- Reproduce intermittent failures and determine root causes
- Test edge cases and deliberately try to make systems fail
- Document experiments, results and conclusions
- Work with technical teams to develop and verify solutions
The goal isn't simply to perform tests.
The goal is to understand the system well enough to identify weaknesses, determine why failures occur, automate testing and make the product more reliable.
Who We're Looking For
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematical Physics, Engineering Physics or a closely related quantitative discipline
- Strong quantitative and analytical reasoning
- Curiosity about how physical systems work
- Ability to learn unfamiliar technical subjects quickly
- Interest in working with both hardware and software
- Comfortable working hands-on with equipment
- Willingness to learn Python and other technical tools
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Comfortable working with experimental data
- Able to clearly document experiments and conclusions
New graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required:
Python, MATLAB, electronics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, robotics, sensors, optics, statistics, data acquisition, CAD, 3D printing, experimental physics, signal processing, control systems or automation.
You Might Be a Great Fit If...
You studied physics because you genuinely wanted to understand how things work.
You enjoy difficult problems more than repetitive work.
If someone hands you a device you've never seen before and tells you something is wrong, your instinct is to start measuring, researching, experimenting and forming hypotheses.
You are comfortable saying:
“I don't know how this works yet, but I can figure it out.”You like computers but also want to work with physical machines.
You would rather solve a new technical problem every week than spend years working on one narrow problem.
What You'll Learn
This role provides unusually broad exposure to:
Scientific instrumentation Physics Robotics Software Electronics Sensors Mechanical systems Fluidics Manufacturing Biotechnology Chemistry Statistics Automation
Systems Testing & Validation is designed to provide broad exposure to our technical organization.
As your strengths emerge, there will be opportunities to grow into areas such as software, robotics, scientific instrumentation, electronics, manufacturing technology, experimental science, systems development, reliability and technical leadership.
What We Value
We're less interested in whether you've already worked on exactly the technologies we use.
We're interested in your:
intelligence curiosity learning speed quantitative reasoning experimental thinking problem-solving ability
We can teach you the specific technologies.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and briefly answer:
Tell us about something technically difficult that you taught yourself to understand or solve. How did you figure it out?
We're interested in how you think, learn and approach unfamiliar problems.
Pay: $55,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
