Biological Lab Technician- Co-op/Contract

A & L Canada Laboratories Inc. (A & L) is one of Ontario’s largest Agricultural and Environmental laboratories specializing in soil, plant tissue, fertilizer, food and water testing. A & L provides reliable, comprehensive and effective services for analytical testing. Our Environmental division provides inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, general chemistry, microbiology and pesticide analysis using state of the art technology and methodology.

About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented co-op student to join our microbiological laboratory team. This position offers hands-on experience in a research and/or applied lab environment, supporting ongoing projects while developing core laboratory skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine laboratory experiments and protocols (e.g., sample preparation, pipetting, media preparation)
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures and results in lab notebooks or digital systems
  • Support data collection, analysis, and basic interpretation
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and biological samples according to standard operating procedures
  • Maintain lab equipment and ensure cleanliness and compliance with safety standards
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of lab supplies
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to project discussions

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of laboratory techniques (e.g., aseptic technique, microscopy, microbial culture—depending on lab focus)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow protocols accurately and safely
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
