Cambridge Pro Fab Inc. is a growing custom steel fabrication company specializing in structural steel fabrications and custom metal products. As part of our continued growth and investment in our operations, we are excited to be launching a new in-house industrial paint department and paint booth facility.

This is a unique opportunity to join our team at ground level and play a key role in developing, organizing, and leading our painting operations. We are looking for an experienced Industrial Painter / Paint Shop Supervisor who can help establish best practices, develop paint processes, support paint booth setup, and oversee the day-to-day operation of the paint department.

The successful candidate will bring strong hands-on industrial painting experience along with leadership skills required to train employees, maintain quality standards, coordinate subcontracted painting activities when required, and help create a safe, efficient, and highly organized painting operation.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Industrial Painter/Paint Shop Supervisor will be responsible for assisting with the setup, organization, and ongoing operation of our new industrial paint booth and paint department.

This position combines hands-on painting responsibilities with leadership duties and quality oversight. The successful candidate will help establish department standards, develop procedures, train employees, coordinate painting activities, and ensure all finished products meet customer specifications and company quality standards.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating and monitoring subcontracted painting requirements when required and ensuring all outsourced work meets quality and specification requirements

Key Responsibilities

Department Setup & Leadership

  • Assist with paint booth commissioning, setup, and workflow development.
  • Establish paint department procedures, standards, and best practices.
  • Develop paint preparation, application, inspection, and quality control processes.
  • Assist in developing work instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and support to employees working within the paint department.
  • Train, mentor, and develop painters and production employees.
  • Support production scheduling and coordinate paint requirements with internal departments.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Painting Operations

  • Prepare surfaces for painting through cleaning, grinding, sanding, masking, and other preparation methods.
  • Read and interpret drawings, work orders, paint specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Mix and prepare coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Provide oversight and training on the application of industrial coatings, primers, and protective finishes using approved application methods and spray equipment.
  • Provide oversight and training on coating thickness, finish quality, coverage, and curing requirements.
  • Provide oversight and training on touch-ups and rework as required.
  • Load, unload, move, and stage parts through the painting process.
  • Maintain paint inventory and communicate material requirements.
  • Troubleshoot paint application and equipment issues as they arise.
  • Maintain paint equipment, spray guns, ventilation systems, and related tools.

Quality Assurance & Inspection

  • Perform detailed visual inspections of painted products to ensure compliance with customer specifications and company standards.
  • Verify proper surface preparation and coating application requirements have been met.
  • Complete inspection reports and quality documentation as required.
  • Identify and address paint defects, quality concerns, and non-conformances.
  • Work closely with Production and Quality teams to resolve issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to paint quality and efficiency.

Subcontracted Painting Oversight

  • Work with Purchasing to coordinate painting requirements with approved subcontract painting vendors when required.
  • Communicate coating specifications, finish requirements, and customer expectations to subcontractors.
  • Inspect completed painted products at subcontractors to ensure compliance with specifications and quality requirements.
  • Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with subcontractors when necessary.
  • Maintain records related to outsourced painting activities and inspections.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance and support the development of approved painting vendors.

Health & Safety

  • Follow and enforce all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and painting-related safety equipment.
  • Maintain safe handling, storage, and disposal practices for paints, coatings, solvents, and related materials.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and work areas.
  • Identify hazards and participate in corrective actions and safety improvements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
  • Complete required regulatory testing and documentation.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 10 years of industrial painting experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • NACE Certification Required.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial coatings, primers, epoxies, urethanes, zinc (preferred) and protective coating systems.
  • Experience reading drawings, specifications, and work orders.
  • Strong understanding of surface preparation and coating application techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred

  • Previous Supervisor / Paint Shop Management experience.
  • Experience setting up, organizing, or leading a paint department.
  • Experience with paint booth operation, maintenance, and ventilation systems.
  • Experience developing procedures, work instructions, and quality standards.
  • Experience coordinating work with subcontracted painting vendors.
  • Knowledge of coating inspection methods and quality control requirements.
  • Experience with overhead cranes and rigging
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles
