Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Dispatch Planner to join our growing transportation team in Edmonton. This role is responsible for planning, scheduling, dispatching, and monitoring the movement of freight, drivers, tractors/ trucks, and trailers to ensure efficient, safe, and timely transportation operations.

The Dispatch Planner plays a key role in maximizing driver and equipment utilization, minimizing delays and empty miles, maintaining customer service standards, and ensuring freight is delivered according to schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate daily freight movements.
  • Assign loads to appropriate drivers, tractors, and trailers based on availability, location, equipment, and delivery requirements.
  • Enter and maintain accurate load information in the dispatch system.
  • Review driver assignments to ensure all loads are dispatched efficiently and on schedule.
  • Monitor driver and vehicle locations using ELD/GPS tracking systems.
  • Review driver Hours of Service (HOS) logs to confirm available driving hours and ensure schedules are realistic and compliant.
  • Monitor pickup and delivery schedules and proactively address delays, missed appointments, breakdowns, weather conditions, or other operational issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of departure times, destinations, cargo, estimated arrival times, and other dispatch information.
  • Coordinate pickup and delivery appointments and provide drivers with necessary trip and route information.
  • Provide ongoing operational support while developing and maintaining professional, productive relationships and communicating effectively with drivers, customers, brokers, shippers, receivers, and internal teams.
  • Schedule equipment for preventative maintenance, DOT testing, and required inspections.
  • Support safe transportation operations by monitoring compliance with company policies and applicable transportation regulations.
  • Complete dispatch documentation accurately and in accordance with established company procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date dispatch records.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other team members to ensure efficient daily operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Operations or Dispatch Manager.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in trucking dispatch, transportation, logistics, load planning, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of trucking operations, freight movement, routing, and scheduling.
  • Experience with Axon and Samsara, or similar platforms is considered a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS), ELD systems, and applicable trucking regulations.
  • Strong geographical knowledge and ability to plan efficient transportation routes.
  • Strong telephone etiquette and customer-service skills including verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when working under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Strong commitment to safety, compliance, and efficient transportation operations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours based on transportation and dispatch operational requirements, including occasional on-call availability when on schedule.
