Full job description

About the Company

At Platinum Marine Group, we build some of the world’s most advanced and luxurious custom yachts. Our team of skilled tradespeople and craftspeople take pride in delivering exceptional quality and innovation. Based in Richmond, BC, our companies — including Crescent Custom Yachts and Tactical Custom Boats — operate at the forefront of marine construction and refit excellence.

About the Role

The CAD Technician is a hands-on technical role embedded within our technical team. Working under the guidance of a qualified Marine Engineer and Naval Architect, you will translate design intent into precise, construction-ready drawings and models across a range of vessel systems and structures.

This position is well suited to a graduate or early-career professional from an engineering technology or manufacturing support program who is eager to grow their skills in a specialized marine environment. You will work with industry-standard tools including Rhino 3D and AutoCAD, contributing to both drawing production and 3D design development.

Why join Platinum Marine?

  • Supportive workplace that values teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement. A meaningful role with real responsibility from day one, working on complex and prestigious vessel projects.
  • Mentorship from an experienced Marine Engineer and Naval Architect who is invested in your development.
  • Exposure to all phases of custom yacht construction, from early concept through build and commissioning.
  • A collaborative team environment with over 150 skilled professionals across engineering, design, and production.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience, plus benefits package.
  • Opportunities for professional growth as our engineering systems and processes continue to develop.
  • Support for further education, certifications, or professional development relevant to the role.

Key Responsibilities:

Drawing Production

  • Produce detailed structural drawings for steel and aluminum components, including frames, plating, bulkheads, and structural assemblies.
  • Develop systems schematics for marine applications including piping, electrical, HVAC, and fluid systems.
  • Create general arrangement drawings, outfitting layouts, and equipment installation plans.
  • Maintain drawing registers, revisions, and version control in accordance with project and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate drawing packages to ensure consistency across structural, systems, and outfitting disciplines.

3D Modelling & Concept Development

  • Build and refine 3D models in Rhino and AutoCAD to support engineering and production.
  • Develop visual concept proposals and change models to communicate design intent to the engineering team, production, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with extracting drawing views, dimensions, and details from 3D models for use in production.
  • Support evaluation of design alternatives by modelling geometric options and spatial arrangements.

Collaboration & Process Support

  • Work closely with the Technical Supervisor, Project Manager, Design Manager, and other engineering staff to interpret design requirements and incorporate review feedback.
  • Liaise with production teams to ensure drawings meet shop-floor needs.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of drafting standards, templates, and internal processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, vessel walkthroughs, and coordination meetings as required.
  • Assist with document management and as-built drawing updates throughout vessel construction.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education

  • Diploma or certificate in Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Technology, or a related technical program from a recognized institution such as BCIT, UFV, or equivalent.
  • Coursework or practical training in 3D CAD modelling, technical drawing, and manufacturing processes is strongly valued.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drawing production is required.
  • Working knowledge of Rhino 3D or willingness to develop proficiency quickly; prior experience with other parametric or surface modelling tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360) is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Familiarity with drawing standards, GD&T principles, and document control practices.
  • Understanding of structural or mechanical systems, materials, and fabrication methods; marine experience is a bonus but not required.

Personal Attributes

  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and drawing quality.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple tasks within project timelines.
  • Collaborative team member who communicates clearly and takes direction well.
  • Curious and eager to develop technical knowledge within the marine and shipbuilding industry.

Work Environment

  • Shipyard and office environment.
  • Diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Fast-paced, deadline-driven projects with multiple priorities.
  • May require overtime or weekend work during peak project phases.
  • Interaction with clients, suppliers, and stakeholders.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Only applicants who submit a résumé will be considered.

We look forward to hearing from you!
