The Winnipeg Art Gallery – Qaumajuq (WAG-Qaumajuq) is one of Canada’s leading visual art museums and home to the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art. Job Summary

The Gallery Technician, Installations is responsible for the installation, handling, and movement of works of art for exhibitions at WAG‑Qaumajuq. Reporting to the Head of Museum Services & Building Operations, this role supports exhibition preparation, construction of display elements, and coordination of artwork logistics. The position requires technical skill, attention to detail, and adherence to conservation and museum standards to ensure the safe handling and presentation of artworks.

Hours of Work: Part-time position with an anticipated transition to full-time hours.

Responsibilities

  • Work in consultation with the Head of Museum Services and others to prepare, construct, and maintain exhibitions in accordance with conservation standards
  • Coordinate pick-up, delivery, handling, and movement of artwork, including liaison with local lenders
  • Prepare exhibition spaces; install, maintain, and dismantle exhibits, including lighting and display structures
  • Construct display units, supports, pedestals, and crates
  • Pack, crate, load, and deliver outgoing shipments; receive, unload, and unpack incoming shipments
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in safe and proper working condition
  • Support a positive visitor experience across all areas of the Gallery
  • Uphold equity and anti-racism principles through ongoing education, bias awareness, and application of organizational policies
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • University degree in Art History, Fine Arts, or a combination of education and experience
  • General knowledge of carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting techniques, lighting, and materials used in exhibition installation
  • Demonstrated experience in art handling practices and preventative conservation in accordance with accepted museum standards
  • Knowledge of industry standards, shipping policies, and procedures
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, artists, volunteers, and the public

Assets:

  • Manual dexterity and strong attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Experience with power and hand tools, including safe operation and maintenance
