Full job description

Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Custom Framer to join our gallery team. The ideal candidate will have experience in custom picture framing, excellent craftsmanship, and strong organizational skills. This role involves designing and assembling custom frames, handling artwork with care, managing framing inventory, and coordinating shipping and receiving. The position offers the opportunity to work with a variety of original artwork, prints, and collectibles while contributing to the daily operations of a professional art gallery.

Duties

  • Consult with clients to recommend framing designs and materials that complement and protect artwork.
  • Measure, cut, assemble, mat, mount, and fit custom frames using professional framing equipment and techniques.
  • Handle artwork with care, ensuring proper preservation and presentation throughout the framing process.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality control for all completed framing projects.
  • Receive, inspect, organize, and store incoming framing materials, artwork, and gallery merchandise.
  • Manage inventory of moulding, matboard, glass, acrylic, hardware, and other framing supplies, ensuring stock levels are maintained.
  • Prepare artwork and completed framing orders for local and international shipping using appropriate packing methods.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving with couriers and suppliers, maintaining accurate shipping records and documentation.
  • Assist with gallery installations, exhibition preparation, and artwork handling as required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized framing workshop and storage areas.
  • Collaborate with gallery staff to ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Assist with other gallery operations and duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in custom picture framing, fine art handling, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of framing materials, mounting techniques, and framing equipment.
  • Excellent craftsmanship with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience managing inventory and ordering framing supplies is an asset.
  • Knowledge of packing and shipping fine artwork is considered an asset.
  • Ability to safely lift and move artwork, framing materials, and shipping boxes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license is considered an asset.
