A leading national law firm is seeking a strategic and people-focused Director, BC Operations & Legal Administration to oversee the operations and administrative functions of its growing Vancouver office.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced professional who excels at building high-performing teams, driving operational excellence, and partnering with legal professionals to deliver exceptional client service. The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the office leadership team and play a critical role in supporting the firm's continued growth and success in British Columbia.
About the Role
Reporting to senior operations leadership, the Director, BC Operations & Legal Administration is responsible for the overall administration and performance of the Vancouver office. The role provides leadership to legal support teams, office services professionals, and operational leaders while ensuring alignment between business objectives, people strategies, and service delivery.
The Director acts as a trusted partner to lawyers, managers, and legal support leaders, fostering collaboration, supporting workplace initiatives, and ensuring the office operates efficiently and effectively.
This position requires a visible, hands-on leader who enjoys being present in the office, building relationships, mentoring teams, and proactively addressing operational challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Leadership
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Vancouver office.
- Drive operational efficiency, consistency, and service excellence across all office functions.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic planning, resource allocation, space planning, and process improvement initiatives.
- Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and best practices.
Legal Support Leadership
- Lead and support teams of legal assistants, paralegals, and administrative professionals.
- Monitor workloads, productivity, capacity, and utilization to ensure effective service delivery.
- Align support structures and resources with evolving practice group needs.
- Foster accountability, professionalism, and a client-service-focused culture.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Manage the Vancouver office operating budget, including planning, forecasting, and expense oversight.
- Partner with finance leadership to monitor performance, identify efficiencies, and maintain fiscal accountability.
- While this role does not require a CPA designation, experience working with legal accounting processes and trust-related transactions is considered an asset.
Talent Development & Leadership
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, training, and employee development initiatives.
- Coach, mentor, and develop managers and team leaders.
- Support succession planning and leadership development efforts.
- Promote employee engagement and foster a positive workplace culture.
Change Management & Innovation
- Lead or support firm-wide projects, organizational initiatives, and system implementations.
- Champion continuous improvement and adoption of new technologies and processes.
- Effectively guide teams through change while maintaining high levels of engagement and performance.
Qualifications
- Significant leadership experience within a professional services, legal, or corporate environment.
- Demonstrated success managing operations and administrative teams.
- Strong people leadership, coaching, and relationship-building skills.
- Experience managing budgets and operational resources.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with legal support functions and law firm operations is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of legal trust processes and transactions is an asset.
Work Environment
- This is primarily an on-site position based in Vancouver.
- The successful candidate is expected to be in the office approximately 90% of the time.
- Occasional work-from-home arrangements may be approved as needed.
