Full job description
Position Overview
Division Chief of Pediatric Pathology - Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario invites applications for a full time Chief of pediatric Anatomical Pathology at CHEO, which is a site of the Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association Reference Laboratory (EORLA). The successful applicant will be a member of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at CHEO, and a member of EORLA. CHEO is a tertiary care teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa. The division handles about 4,500 surgical specimens. There are about 100 autopsies a year. The successful applicant will be leading a team of three pediatric pathologists and a part time neuropathologist.
The Chief of Anatomical Pathology will be responsible for oversight of a specialized pediatric anatomical pathology laboratory that provides comprehensive diagnostic services to CHEO patients and will be the primary resource supporting excellence in pediatric patient care throughout the 18 hospitals within the Champlain region.
The CHEO Divisional Chief is responsible for overseeing the quality of medical diagnosis, care, and treatment for all patients within their division, as well as managing the division’s medical staff. Key duties include serving as a resource for laboratory personnel and working collaboratively with administration and management across CHEO and EORLA. Additionally, the Chief oversees administrative activities at the divisional, departmental, hospital, and regional levels, and participates in service coverage by providing clinical consultation, education, and support to regional healthcare professionals as needed.
The Division Chief will ensure the Division contributes to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching and supervise resident laboratory rotations in pediatric pathology. Opportunities to engage in independent and collaborative research are available, and activities complementary to and consistent with the roles and objectives of the laboratory are encouraged.
Basic Requirements
Applicants should have demonstrated experience in pediatric anatomical pathology principles, practices, and instrumentation as well as leadership skills and experience commensurate with the Division chief role. The successful applicant must also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact and work collaboratively with individuals within and outside of CHEO and EORLA. While English is the language of the health record, functionality in French is an asset.
Candidates must have an MD and Fellowship in Anatomical Pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the equivalent. Pediatric Pathology Fellowship training or equivalent experience is required. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
As a pre-condition of contract, all new CHEO/EORLA employees or contractors will be required to obtain and provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check dated within six (6) months from the date of issue.
Per the COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, if you are successful in the selection process, an offer of employment/contract is conditional upon presentation of government issued documentation confirming that you have been fully vaccinated with a vaccine that has been approved in Canada. Any individual who cannot be vaccinated on medical grounds or other grounds recognized by the Human Rights Code can request an accommodation. Please note that with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s (OHRC) position has been that a singular belief or personal preference against vaccinations and/or masks is not protected on the ground of creed under the Code.
