About the Company
Walco Industries is a fast-growing company and a leader in the hydro-demolition and industrial cleaning market in Western Canada, with operations based in Campbell River and Port Alberni and activities principally across Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver and throughout Western Canada. The company is also expanding into the United States through its subsidiary, Walco Industries USA.
We are seeking an experienced CPA to oversee our accounting department and support the financial management of our operations. This role combines financial reporting and controls with hands-on involvement in job costing, budgeting, bid preparation, and cash flow management.
This is an opportunity to join a growing, owner-led business at an important stage. You will work directly with the President and CEO and an experienced Fractional CFO, shape the company’s financial processes as it scales, and gain exposure to cross-border operations.
Position Purpose
The Controller is responsible for maintaining accurate and timely financial information, overseeing accounting operations, and providing practical financial guidance to the President and CEO and Fractional CFO. Working closely with operational staff and the external accountant, the Controller helps management assess job profitability, manage working capital, and make informed business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Oversee the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
- Supervise and support accounting staff, establish priorities, and review their work.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing procedures, including account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Prepare timely monthly internal financial reports and explain significant variances, trends, and financial risks to management.
- Maintain appropriate accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Coordinate year-end information and respond to inquiries from the external accountant.
- Account for equipment and other fixed assets, including capital additions, amortization, and equipment financing and lease obligations.
- Support accounting for the U.S. subsidiary, Walco Industries USA, including intercompany transactions, foreign currency translation, and consolidated reporting.
Job Costing and Work in Progress
- Review jobs in progress with operational staff to assess completion status, costs incurred, outstanding commitments, and estimated costs to complete.
- Compare actual and forecast job costs with approved budgets and investigate significant variances.
- Monitor job profitability and identify cost overruns, billing gaps, and other financial concerns.
- Maintain reliable job costing information and support timely progress and final billing.
- Prepare the monthly work-in-progress schedule and recognize contract revenue on a percentage-of-completion basis.
- Track holdbacks and lien-related billing requirements on construction contracts.
- Review completed jobs to identify lessons that can improve future estimates and operational performance.
Budgeting and Bid Support
- Assist with preparing bids for new jobs by reviewing cost estimates, pricing assumptions, overhead allocations, and anticipated margins.
- Work with operational staff to incorporate labour, equipment, materials, subcontractor, travel, and other relevant costs into estimates.
- Support the Fractional CFO in preparing operating budgets and financial forecasts.
- Provide financial analysis to support pricing, resource allocation, and capital expenditure decisions.
Cash Flow and Working Capital
- Prepare and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast and longer-range cash projections.
- Monitor customer collections, supplier payments, payroll requirements, and other financial commitments.
- Recommend actions to address anticipated cash shortfalls and improve working capital.
- Keep the President and CEO and Fractional CFO informed of cash availability and significant financial obligations.
Compliance and Tax Reporting
- Oversee the accurate preparation and timely filing of GST/HST and applicable PST returns and remittances.
- Oversee payroll deductions, remittances, annual information returns, and related reconciliations.
- Oversee WorkSafeBC assessments and reporting.
- Maintain supporting records for tax filings and other applicable financial reporting obligations.
- Coordinate with the external accountant on corporate tax matters and accounting issues requiring advice.
- Coordinate U.S. sales tax and other U.S. filing obligations with external advisers, as applicable.
- Support responses to tax authority inquiries and financial compliance reviews.
Process Improvement and Management Support
- Improve accounting workflows, reporting tools, and the use of Sage 50.
- Provide clear, practical financial advice to management and operational staff.
- Maintain the confidentiality of financial, employee, and business information.
- Carry out other financial management responsibilities consistent with the role.
Qualifications and Experience
Required

- At least three years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, including supervising staff.
- Strong knowledge of accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and cash flow management.
- Experience with Canadian sales tax and payroll reporting.
- Ability to review financial information critically, investigate discrepancies, and communicate findings clearly.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with management, accounting staff, operational personnel, and external advisers.
Preferred
- A management accounting focus within the candidate’s professional experience or training.
- Experience in industrial services, contracting, or another business involving job costing and project budgets.
