Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is a leading centre for pediatric education and research in Canada. In partnership with the Stollery Children’s Hospital and community pediatrics across Northern Alberta, we provide exceptional care for children, youth, and families. Guided by our values of compassion, growth, and health equity, our team advances pediatric care through innovative research, accredited training programs, and unique learning opportunities led by dedicated faculty.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Program Lead and Lead Research Coordinator, the role of the Research Nurse Coordinator (NRC) is to recruit for and coordinate research projects led by the PEAK Research Team (Pediatric Emergency: Advancing Knowledge, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine). The Research Nurse Coordinator will screen and approach families in the Stollery Emergency Department (ED), administer study procedures and questionnaires, administer study medications as required, and complete study specific documentation. They will further coordinate and operationalize research studies which includes submitting ethics applications, training research and clinical staff, collaborating with AHS teams (research pharmacy, Stollery Emergency Department staff), ensuring the execution of contracts, managing data collection, and maintaining study documentation to ensure patient safety. This position will require a high degree of professionalism and strong communication skills to facilitate the successful recruitment of study participants.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of the world’s top academic health science centres. With 21 departments, multiple research institutes and centres, and a focus on excellence in education, research, and clinical care, the faculty trains outstanding medical and dental professionals and drives global health innovation in collaboration with partners across sectors.- Identify and screen potential research participants through the Emergency Department electronic charting system (Connect Care). Approach the subject and/or family for informed consent by providing an explanation of the proposed study and answer any questions they may have about the study or study drugs
- Administer study drug and collect data, including patient vital signs, pain scores, level of consciousness and other related data. Monitor the patient for any adverse events during their enrollment in the study
- Collect research information and other study data through subject interview/questionnaires and clinical record review (e.g. Connect Care). Ensure all information collected is accurate and complete, and is collected according to the methods and guidelines of each individual research project.
- Perform study preparation and set-up activities, including preparation of consent forms, assent forms and ethics submissions, renewals and amendments, drafting study materials, including data collection materials (data collection forms, logs etc.) and quality assurance materials (study checklists etc.), and submitting site-specific operational approvals and AHS research agreements
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) in relation to the study protocols. Communicate study procedures and any changes therein to study assistants. Build and maintain electronic databases for research studies on REDCap, an electronic data capture software designed for research purposes.
- Update the Program Lead and Principal Investigators on study progress. Assist in preparing for study monitoring / audits at our site, under the supervision and guidance of the study investigator. Meet with and provide study updates to lead site teams (e.g. Principal Investigator, National Coordinators) regarding recruitment and study progress
- Present and attend study related training, and monthly PEAK research staff meetings. Responsible for supervision of program staff related to the specific studies that this position is overseeing.
- Undergraduate degree in Nursing, preferably a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
- 1+ year experience nursing experience working with children or families
- Computer and iPad proficiency is required
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and decision-making skills
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year related experience in a research environment (specifically clinical trials), healthcare, or work with families/children is an asset
- Emergency medicine or Pediatrics experience is an asset
- Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), data management software (REDCap), and clinical record software (ConnectCare) is an asset
